Cooperstown in winter

I've never been to Cooperstown, and was wondering if it would make a good destination (from NYC) for a long weekend in January or February. I always hear of people going in warmer weather. How are the roads in that area for winter driving with a regular car, not an SUV or truck? Are things pretty lively in the town in the winter. Lots of places to eat? Any cross country skiing? Do you have a favorite place nearby to stay?

I can't imagine that it is a great location during winter. The roads to get there are windy and quite hilly from what I remember. If it is snowing, it could get nasty. I would recommend doing it during the summer as it is a lot of fun walking around the town and the HOF area. Every time I have gone there is a game going on at Doubleday Field.

I've been there in November and it was very cold. On the other hand, we had the Baseball Hall of Fame practically to ourselves.

I've been there in February, just to see what it was like while passing by on the NY Thruway. We go there every summer for the opera at Glimmerglass.

Impression: empty. Deep snow everywhere including piled beside the road. I am not a baseball fan, so I did not notice whether the HOF was open, but many of the shops did not appear to be.

The Otesaga Inn www.otesaga.com is open year round, and you might get in touch with them about winter sports in the area.

Ackislander, That's exactly what I was afraid of! Some destinations transform into a different type of vacation for the winiter, but others just sort of shut down.

A long time ago I went in January. I drove a rear wheel drive Cadillac Brougham. It was snowing lightly. The roads were OK and the interstate highways were just fine. I had the whole town to myself; the museum, bar, etc... I stayed at the Otsego Inn and got a bargain basement price.

You can do it in a car as long as you have no snowstorm. If there is one you are in trouble.
