Cooper Landing worth a visit?
Do you think Cooper Landing is worth visiting? We will be leaving Seward and we'll have 2 more nights to spend in Alaska. We were thinking of ending up in Cooper Landing and then heading to Anchorage on our last day for our evening flight. Any thoughts?

If you can leave Seward early, consider driving down to Homer. It will take about 3.5 hours and is beautiful once you reach the Ninilchik area along the Cook Inlet.
Homer is outstanding for scenery, beach combing, boat tours, halibut charters, and kicking back and relaxing. You will enjoy the spit for restaurants and getting great photos of Kachema Bay.. take a day trip to Halibut Cove. Your evening flight will give you options.. the return drive with traffic and stops will be around five hours back to Anchorage, and plenty of good spots to stretch your legs, get photos, buy water and stop for lunch.. Good luck and hope it all works out, J. |
I loved fishing the Kenai River and eating at the Kenai Princess Lodge in Cooper Landing, but Homer is much more incredible. The drive seemed never-ending but it was worth every minute once we got to Homer!

Homer has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth, IMHO. I vote Homer! :) You can drive through Cooper Landing, stop at the Princess, and check out the beautiful Kenai River without spending a couple of nights there, if you want to see it all.

I second my good pal BayouGal.. the thing is, Cooper Landing is only about forty minutes from Seward.
**stop to look and stretch but keep going south. Then you'll come through Sterling, and Soldotna, where the Kenai River is, and Fred Meyer is there if you need to stock up on anything.. Homer will then be 75 miles to the south.. watch for moose and slow drivers, but be camera ready.. J:) |
Coopers Landing makes sense for an overnight stop if you are planing to drift boat fish for salmon on the Kenai, or if you want to try combat fishing on the Russian River. Otherwise it makes a good stretch break and picture opportunity and then head on toward Homer.

Wow...I really didn't consider Homer b/c it seemed far and we have to end up in Anchorage for our last day to get home. I guess I'll have to rethink that. How far is Homer from Anchorage?

In summer with traffic and two or three stops, figure on 5-6 hours of driving time..
Cooper Landing could be a pleasant two or three hour diversion for fishing or a raft trip on the river, or lunch at the Princess Lodge which is lovely. My family used to get up early and shop in Anchorage and be back in the evening back in the day.. on a red eye, the drive is very doable, it depends on you and what you prefer for drive time and scenery, etc.. good luck, J. |
I too suggest Homer. If possible, spend your 2 nights there, and head out to Anchorage the am of your flight- if the flight is in the evening??
