cool Manhattan clubs

My 2 girl friends and I will be in NYC the 1st week of Nov and would like to go to a cool club on Thursday night. We from Washington state, are in our late 30s, married (here without spouses) and want to dance and experience the NYC club life for a night. We would appreciate input.

The club scene in New York is different than other cities in that it skews to a really young crowd. 19-24 year old ladies, 25+ men. Is there a particular type of music you're looking to find? There are lot of loungier places that might be more fun and not as obnoxious as a lot of the "clubs" in NYC.

Agreed that the clubs skew young - my 21 and 18 year old step daughters go at least every week or 2 to one of the trendy places - and I think late 30's might feel out of place. (This is Paris, Lohan territory and 30 is quite mature).

But there are lots of places better for adults (and where you won;t have to stand on line forever waiting to get in).

You might have a look at New York magazine and Time Out New York - which lists all types of clubs not just the trendiest - like TenJune, Butter, Bungalow, Plumm - and all the others shows in the supermarked tabloids.

New York has dozens if not hundreds of dance clubs, catering to every taste. Check out both www.sheckys.com and Citysearch for ideas.

And CALL ahead to get on the list, or you may stand outside and never get in.

(All that being said, Home and the Guest House, both on W. 27th Street in Chelsea's club land, are solid options. If you like 80's music, Culture Club on Varick is popular.)

Remember the great clubs like Jackie 60, Mother, Coney Island High, Roxy, Danceteria, Sound Factory, and Limelight?

Ahhhh, those were heady nights.

Avalon is in Limelight's church, but I've never been since it became Avalon.

Most of the mega-clubs are in West Chelsea now and have recently received some very unfavorable media attention due to a few high-profile incidents.

I agree most of the clubs in NYC are geared towards 30's. Lounges might work out better for you.
My girlfriends and I love HOME in chelsea.
