Contender for a Never Before Asked Question?
Ok, so maybe this is a question never asked before, or maybe I am just not very well read.
Which museum that you have personally visited, had the best cafe/adjacent eatery? Was it expensive? Was the produce varied? What was your fave dish and why? |
Good question, easy answer.
Café Sabarsky, attached to the Neue Galerie across the street from the Metropolitan Museum in NYC. |
Gardyloo---I have never been to the MET before, is the Neue Galerie physically attached to the MET? Or is it a different gallerie altogether?

The Petrie Court Cafe located on the ground floor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It has a lovely English Tea, which is quite good. It is adjacent to Central Park. |
The cafe at the Getty is really rather **yummy**. It has tons of choices but even the premade sandwiches are outstanding.
|
Thanks Suzie.

OOps was this supposed to be anywhere or in NYC. Sorry if I got off track.
I was just being silly with the asterisks. Really the Getty has a great cafe and there is a sitdown restaurant there too. I had a chicken salad sandwich with basil leaves and some nuts and apples. It was premade. My sis had a vegetarian that was outstanding too. |
ilovetotravel29 - no, the Neue Galerie is a separate gallery (20th century German/Austrian art) set up by the son of Estee Lauder. Great collection of modernist (etc.) Viennese and German art, well worth a visit. It's not connected to the Metropolitan Museum.

Mmmm... the little European style cafe in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Delish!!
|
sorry- to specify- the one INSIDE the museum. great croissants, and other pastry, and wonderful cappucino.
|
the cafe at Wave Hill in the bronx - the setting is unbelievable, and while they only sell prepackaged sandwhiches they are on delicious breads, and are fresh and with interesting ingredients (ie, cranberry and spinach chicken salad, etc.). Great coffee as well.

The Courtyard Restaurant in the Art Institute in Chicago. Beautiful. Not very expensive.
|
The American Indian museum in DC has a pretty good cafe that serves delicious Native inspired food. The price is ok if you compare it with museum food around the country.
Unfortunately, I've eaten in it once, even though I'm in DC often. It closes too early for me and my meetings... |
Suzie, is that the LA Getty you are referring to? I hope to visit when I am in LA early next month.
|
Yes it is. It's a beautiful place. There is one building (where visiting exhibets are housed) just above the gardens that has views so amazing that my sister and I screamed when we walked out the door. When we had walked in the building it was raining and there were clouds all around so we could pretty much only see the gardens below. When we came out of the building (this was the second floor) the clouds had lifted and we could see all the way out to the ocean and all the greean mountains. It was breathtaking - or scream inducing, whatever applies to you! ;)
