Gee, Debbie Downer!! LOL
I will NEVER EVER visit NYC in the summer because of the heat and humidity--oh, and I have lived there!! So there you have it. <smile>

Those two sets of relatives make regular appearances here when Florida is under discussion...

Of course people who live here don't spend the summer months indoors, lol.

We DO "live there" in the summer and in southeast Florida to be exact. This whole "brutal summer" notion is, IMO, overblown by people who do NOT live here.

It isn't any worse here, heat or humidity-wise than some of the summer days we spent in Northern Virginia and, in fact, it is actually more pleasant for those of us who live on or near the beach.

I am not sure if you are still looking at moving to Florida or have already moved to Florida yet, but I would definitely recommend looking around the suburbs of Tampa. My husbands grandfather lived in the region their and it was close to everything. About 30 minutes to I75, where he lived which was New Port Richey.

Jobs for nurses were pretty good down their also. Plus he lived a couple of miles in land and never really had to worry about the hurricanes that much, even when they did get hit by some because he was not directly on the coast he never got flooded and never had much in the way of storm damage.

Just to throw in - for those who live here, if you are anywhere near the coast, you will experience a much milder climate than those of us who live inland in the middle of the state.

I live about an hour south of Gainesville - a great city due to the university for culture. But it is nevertheless a more rural area in Florida where a university has sprung up. Just outside the city, it is pretty "cracker" - please excuse the term.

JeffreyGavroche has received some good advice about making acquaintances. There is some reticence about welcoming individuals who are noticeably "not Southern." Just a thing, not an insurmountable barrier.

The weather - JeffreyGavroche, you have been here through the very finest time of year in the area. Very soon we enter what I refer to as "Florida Summer" - we all just stay inside. You will acclimate to that too, but accept that you will have heat, humidity, various flying biting pests, and summer non-beach misery until around October. Oh, and let's not forget the snake population around Gainesville.

At any rate, we have lived here since 1986, so there is something to be said for the area. You have my best wishes as you settle in to our beautiful state. (Really!)

Snakes are not a reason to stay indoors, IMHO.
