Conn. Fall Foliage
 

Can anyone tell me where the best places are in Conn. to see the leaves changing in Mid-Oct (15-17th)? We were thinking of flying into Hartford and using that as our base. Are there some easy hiking trails that might be beautiful to walk? I briefly read of some fall festivals in and around the area. That might be neat too! It will be 2 adults and a toddler going.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Especially if you have a must see area you think would be great to stay, outside of Hartford.

Stopping at some of the CT Wine Trail locations would be nice. McLaughlin in Sandy Hook, and Haight and Hopkins up in Litchfield Co. have great views and all would be good for picnics. Litchfield County in NW Connecticut and the adjacent Berkshires in SW Massachusetts is the area for you!

PS: And, how could I forget the equally beautiful lower Hudson Valley in New York which is also adjacent to the other two areas.

Lots of good viewing spots in northwest CT, Litchfield county -- try state parks such as Kent Falls, Haystack Mountain (more a big hill, really) in Norfolk or Mt.
Tom near Morris. Last two have easy hiking trails up to a stone viewing tower, with great vistas of the Berkshire foothills.

It was a low-key regular trip for us when our kids were young. Nice for a picnic, and plenty of leaves to enjoy. Easy drive from Hartford, but some of the main drives are very popular on leaf-peeping weekends. Plenty of back roads as an alternative if you have a good map.

Of course, it all depends on the weather...Columbus Day holiday is considered prime leaf time in CT -- northern New England has usually dropped leaves by then.

If you want a close-to-leaves hotel, book soon: it's very popular.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like the NW part of the State is popular for viewing the foliage.

Darlingbella, the drive to Kent is probably a bit over 1 hour. Rte 84 is the highway to use. Rte 6 may also work most of the way. You will have to get off Rte 6 around Woodbury to get to Kent. It will be a nicer drive.
