confused about Newark Airport
I will be picking up a relative at Newark International Airport in about a week. Looking at a map and various on-line directions(from Northern Westchester, NY)there seem to be many different routes. The route closet to home seems to be Palisades to GSP to 46/21 to routes1-9 into the airport. Any ideas? Thanks for your help

There's no simple, guaranteed traffic free route. Since you mentioned Palisades, my guess is you're close to Bear Mtn Bridge. I would take Palisades all the way to the end, hop on local streets to navigate your way to I95S to the Turnpike. It's the most direct route, but does require making the connection in Ft. Lee. If you're going during am rush hour, then avoid this route due to GWB traffic.
Alternately, you can take the GWB into NJ. |
If you go south on the Palisades and don't take the GWB exit, you will land in Fort Lee. You'll pass a Kings supermarket and then a Staples. At this traffic light, you will see signs for just about every highway in NJ. There are signs for 95, 4, 46, and 17. If you get on 95 south here, just take it to exit 13. Pay toll, then follow to Newark Airport. You will be on a portion of 1 & 9 but really won't know it. Avoid 21...it ultimately turns into McCarter Highway...and that is just a plain lie by calling it a highway. :o)
I hope I've lead you in the correct direction...I take this route so many times that I can do it in my sleep, I just hope I explained it correctly. |
as other posters have said, get to 95 that is the easiest way into newark.

Just to clarify the directions...from I95/NJ Turnpike South take exit 14 and follow signs for Routes 1&9 Elizabeth / Newark Liberty Int'l Airport.
Basically once you get through the toll plaza just stay to the left as there are exits for 78, 21 & 22 on the right before you get to the airport. The entrance to the airport is maybe 1.5-2 miles from the Turnpike toll booth, and the exit is from the Left lane. I agree with previous posters, taking 95/Turnpike is easier to navigate than Garden State Parkway to 78 to 1&9 route. Taking GSP to 46 to 21 is one of those Mapquest pitfalls. I would not go that route for any reason! |
The Saw Mill to the TZ bridge, Palisade Parkway to the NJ turnpike. From the PP it's well signed to get to the NJ pike. Once on the pike keep right, exit 14ABC, keep right, keep right.

If you take exit 14ABC you will end up at: A=Bayonne, B= Jersey City, C= Holland Tunnel.
Take exit 14 (with no letters) or you will go east instead of in the direction of the airport. |
Right, it's 13 ABC

Thanks for all the help guys. Hopefully I won't screw up and get lost!

Thank you all for your help. I ended up leaving from the Elmsford, NY area and took the TZB to 9W to the Palisades to the NJT to exit 14. I made it both ways without getting lost, which is miraculous for me, but couldn't have done it without your help!
