Coney Island Missed Opportunity?

Have you ever had a destination that you really had planned on going to, but delays etc caused you to miss seeing it? We were not able to visit Coney Island in June. Could someone give me their impressions of what it is like, historical significance etc.?

Gail we were there for a day a couple of weeks ago and sad to say it is not the amusemnent park of yesteryear.

It is very run down, and shoddy looking and there was lots of litter everywhere.

The beach and boardwalk are still there and looking out at the ocean you can still get a feel for what it must have been in its heyday.

One the bright side the NY Aquarium is there as well and very nicely done, part of the Wildlife Association (sorry, don't mean to be punny here), but it is part of the Zoo system here.

The old cyclone, has not been running for many years and is a rusting reminder of days gone by.

Hope you had a good time here, and sorry to say other than a nice beach you didn't really miss much.

tweedy

Alas, 'tis true. 'Tis no more , at least no more what it was in the days when my Aunt Irene managed a bath house on the boardwalk there. I can highly recommend this web site to you for a sense of what was. http://naid.sppsr.ucla.edu/coneyisland/index.html

True- Unless you wanted to see the N.Y Aquarium (which is nice) you definitely did not miss anything.

Coney Island's heyday was back at the turn of the century to the 1920's and 1930's. BTW- I believe the Cyclone still runs (although I would not ride it) but the Parachute Jump has been closed for years. But like I said, you didn't miss much...

SB if it's not the Cyclone, what rollercoaster is the one rusting in the big field.

Looked to me like alot of the property there should and could be rejuvinated and maybe have new opportunities for the whole area.

Where are the developers when we need them, lol.

tweedy

Minor League Basball Stadium is being built on the land of the old Steeplechase Amusement Park. Ground has just been broken. Also Casino gambling has been proposed for years but nothing happening yet.
