Believe there is a bus from the San Jose train station to Emeryville. I would try looking at BART site or www.sfvisitor.org I'd love to hear of your trip later. Something we've thought of doing often.

There is Amtrak service San Jose-Emeryville, either train or connecting bus, get a ticket San Jose-Chicago. You can check your lugagge in at San Jose. Just don't get confused with Caltrain, it's the same station in San Jose as Amtrak, but different destination.

Maybe Greyhound bus, but why would you pay more for taking it?

BART doesn't go to Emeryville nor San Jose. You will have to change twice - taking a local bus to and from BART. Very inconvenient with luggage.

Jim,

The only way i know of is to take Caltrain (commuter train) from San Jose to the end of the line at 4th & King, get off and take San Francisco Muni's N. Judah line (which is like a lightrail train) right outside of the Caltrain station. Get on, going in the direction of the Embarcadero BART Station. This will take you to the Embarcadero BART station where you can catch BART into Emeryville. BART is like a high speed under/below ground rail system. I don't know if BART will take you directly to AMTRACK once you're in Emeryville. I'm pretty sure about the Caltrain and BART portions of the trip, i'm just not too sure if i'm telling you the right MUNI line to get from CALTRAIN to BART. I've taken all 3 forms of transportation before, and it's fine - clean, safe, and used by quite a few people. It's just a bit of a pain in terms of transfers and such.

You should probably call or check out the websites on Caltrain, SF Muni and BART to make sure i'm sending you in the right direction. I think they all have separate customer service lines that can help you with trip planning in terms of scheduling and which stations or stops to use.

Hope this helps.

Jim,

BART or Caltrain are a very inconvenient way to get to Emeryville. As Faina has pointed out, you can take Amtrak directly from the San Jose Diridon train station downtown at Cahill and West Santa Clara Streets to Emeryville. You can take either the Capitol Corridor or Coast Starlight trains to Emeryville and then connect with the California Zephyr. Be careful not to get onto to either Caltrain or the ACE(Altamont Commuter Express Train) which also serve the city's Diridon Station.
