Commuter Train f/Boston to NYC????
We are flying to Boston and would like to travel to NYC while there. Is there a commuter train that is reasonable, does anyone know? Any other inexpensive way to go?Thanks in advance.

Try Amtrak.

I have heard that the bus from Boston to NYC is far less expensive than the train, and they have decent ammenedies on board (movies, bathrooms). The bus station is attached to South Station (the train station) and goes to the Port Authority in NYC (8th Ave and 40th St. I believe). If you need to save money, check out this option.

The Amtrack train leaves from South Station in Boston several times a day for NYC. There are a few that are expres(Accella) and have fewer stops. The train takes approx. 5 hours and costs around $150 round trip. They do offer a 10% AAA discount. The train will bring you right into Penn Station in NYC. The newest train is the Accella High Speed which costs around $120 each way and gets there in under 4 hours yet they have been having many delays and it doesn't always arrive on time etc.. The new trains are very nice though. I usually take the regular Acela Express that has fewer stops and it works very well for me- the seats are comfortable and I don't have to worry about traffic. Hope this helps you out.( I get my tickets over the phone by calling Amtrack - you can also check the schedule on line and book tickets on line.)

You should look into Amtrak's sale -- from I believe around now through mid September, Amtrak is selling 2 seats on the Acela (the high speed train) for the price of one, which a) makes the whole thing more financially feasible and b) is a lot quicker than the bus. Unless there's a sale on the Delta or USAir shuttles, I'd say this is the way to go. Look it up on www.amtrak.com.

Cathy is wrong about the length of the trip -- only the slowest most local train would take 5 hrs. to do that trip. Most conventional trains do it in about 4 - 4 1/2 hrs., and the Acela takes 3 1/2 hrs.

Buses will take longer but are cheaper and you get to see a city or two along the way. The train is far more comfortable and the ride along Conn.'s coast is spectacular, but do try to find the cheapest fare. I've done this trip as a one-day excursion (not sure if there's a fare difference) but it's a long day. Better to do one overnight.

You might look into the shuttle flights. Most weekend fares are about $100 round trip and often other flights for $150 r/t. (This is Delta, but think US Air also has a shuttle.) More time in NYC, less time en route!

Tootie is right about the length of the train ride, but wrong about the bus taking longer (assuming you're not taking Acela Express). The Peter Pan bus takes 4 1/2 hours from Boston to NYC. (If you go by bus, definitely take Peter Pan over Greyhound).
