Can someone compare the
Williamsburg Lodge to the Woodlands and Governors Hotel? All are on-site, and with different rates, obviously the latter two are not as luxurious. Any recent stays and personal opinions? TIA. |
HI--I dont know anything about the Governors Hotel--don't think it was there the last time we were at CW--but the Woodlands is only nominally on site...i.e it is at quite a distance from attractions in a remote area and is not a "walkable" location. The Lodge is across the street from the Inn.

The Governors Inn is NOT onsite. Find a map of Williamsburg and find where the RR tracks cross N. Henry St. GI is on the NW corner of the intersection. I'm sure it's nice, but I'd be inclined to stay on Bypass Rd instead. It seems to be closed quite often. It's really at the "bottom" of the CW hotel offerings, and I'm NOT saying it's bad.
Woodlands is a brand new hotel built adjacent to the Visitors center, but not in the historical area. Nice amenites and probably a good compromise at cost convenience and quality. The Lodge is in the historic area, across the street from the former Abby Aldrich Rockerfeller Folk Art Museum, and a stones throw (if you have a good arm) from the Magazine. Much nicer quaility & amenites than the other two. Wodd |
I agree with rb's description of the properties.
The Governor's Inn is approximately comparable to the Disney All Star Resorts. And while it's not IN the restored area, it is only three blocks from it. A pleasant walk. I'm not clear on when it's open and not. I think it's closed during the low season and I know it's been offered to Wm & Mary in the past for dormitory space. Once for overcrowding on campus, and twice I think because of dorm fires. The only thing I would add about the Woodlands is that it's super popular with families as it has suites, a pool, and a moderately priced restaurant with kid food. |
The Woodlands is walkable to CW and is on the site the shuttle buses originate from. The Woodlands is on the side of CW where the windmill is. Its not a short walk but it is a walk I wouldn't mind.

We stayed at the Williamsburgh Lodge tow years ago and it was great. We are a family of 5, kids were 16.15,and 12. We were all in one room, i think. There was plenty of parking. It was freezing and raining the whole time (Easter), but we made the best of it.
Great walking paths there, in better weather. Have fun! It did come w/ breakfast. |
