Columbus Day NEW YORK
 

Because of information gratefully received from this site we have narrowed down our hotel choices to Kimberly Suites, Shelburne Murray Hill and Affinia Dumont. Can anyone offer information on any of these places? We are 4 adults and 2 children visiting NYC over Columbus Day weekend. We were advised to stay east of 5th Avenue or South of 44th St. to avoid the parade route on Monday. Thanks very much.

The suggestion you stay east of 5th Avenue is not valid. The parade will have little or no impact wherever you stay. The only impact involves vehicular crosstown traffic along the parade route.

As I recall you are leaving Monday morning from LGA. You had asked about an indoor pool. The Kimberly has one and the others don't. I would also personally prefer staying in the 50s where the Kimberly is vs the 30s where the other 2 are. It really depends on what you plan to do. If you expect to spend a fair amount of time downtown (SOL, Soho, Chinatown etc.) the 30s are obviously closer though.

We've had several family members stay at the Shelbourne for a NYC family event. We found great deals in the special offer section of the affinia website. Everyone loved their accommodations. The one bedroom suites are very roomy, and even the studio suites were quite large. The location is convenient but away from the crowds and commotion of Times Square. From the hotel, if you walk over to 3rd avenue, (1 block east), you'll find grocery stores, delis, drug stores, coffee shop type places (good for breakfast) and other restaurants. The Lexington avenue line is nearby and at Grand central you can take the shuttle trains to the west side subways. Several bus lines are nearby too. The neighborhood is quiet. You can easily walk to the Empire State Building. If you are walkers, you can walk cross town to the Times Sq area or down to the village pretty easily (we live in the village and many of our relatives staying there walked back and forth and enjoyed the stroll).

When is Columbus Day? I thought we forgot about that holiday. A holiday dedicated to the man who introduced slavery and destruction to the Americas and its cultures. How about siting a date of the year? How many of you know when Columbus Day is? Don't get out your calendar to figure out when it is. Maybe we could change this "holiday" to Native Americans Day.

Not sure how your reply helped me at all in choosing a hotel. For your information Columbus Day is celebrated the 2nd Monday in October, always has been as far as I can recall. This year it is October 11th if you'd care to celebrate in any way. To the rest of you, I do appreciate your feedback.

bonmark, before everything was converted to Monday holidays, it was celebrated on October 12.
