Columbia, South Carolina question

Hello,
My husband and 2 friends want to go to a Univ. of South Carolina football game.
Can anyone recommend a decent hotel in or near Columbia?
Thanks,
AMcanadian

What do you mean by "decent"? My favorite is the Claussen's Inn-- a sort of inn in an old bakery right at the popular and busy Five Points area.

Second Claussen's Inn. If that is sold out, try The Whitney on Devine Street, The Clarion on Gervais or The Hampton Inn in the Vista on Gervais.

Do you have tickets? They aren't for sale (ever) and if it is a popular team (Clemson, Tennessee, Florida, Bama, Miss St) you will not find any tickets for sale at the gates by individuals.

There will be around 125,000 tailgating before hand so expect very large crowds. Traffic is one direction into Williams-Brice Stadium and one way out.

We go all the time as I'm an alumni of the University of South Carolina.

Ah, the Whitney. Thanks GoTravel for filling in the blank. Once Claussen's was indeed sold out and the Whitney is where we stayed, but I couldn't remember that name for the life of me. A senior moment.

LOL Patrick! I've spent many a night at The Whitney when the Claussen's Inn was sold out. Very convenient to Diane's across the street.

Thank you all for your responses.
Yes, GoTravel, they have tickets. It is the Spurier/Florida game they are going to. If you are a Gamecock fan you will appreciate the joke that is going around that Steve is coaching at USC because he always was a little cocky!!
Can you recommend a hotel on the south side of town because they will be driving from Gainesville, Fla?
Thanks again,
AMCanadian

If I had to guess, they might be staying 50-100 miles south.

For the Florida game, they'll be lucky to get a room.

I'd go on travelocity or expedia and start checking availability.

They'll have a blast! Have them stop at Bojangles or Finch's for fried chicken for the tailgate!

ttt for AMcanadian.

AMCanadian, I looked at travelocity and didn't know anything about any of the hotels available. Most are showing zero availability.

At this late date, I would book whatever is available because pickings are very slim.

Thanks for doing that GoTravel.
Do you anything about SUMTER,SC or any of the towns south of Columbia as they don't mind staying out of town (even a hundred miles) as long as it does not require going further north.
Thanks again for your help.

AM, Sumter is to the east of Columbia totally out of their way.

They will be driving up I-95?

I would drive to Hardeeville right outside Savannah. It is right on I-95 unless they don't mind staying in Columbia.

Do they party at all? Not sure what time the game is but I'm sure it is televised.

Chances are Columbia will be a wild town that night.

Great places to party are in The Vista on Gervais Street which starts about a block from the Capitol building.
