bf, you live in Bandon?

What's the best time of day to play golf there (no rain or fog....I can deal with the wind). Early morning or afternoon? This would be in early September. Also, how late can you play there during that time? Can you go till 8:00 pm?

Early morning is best, tandg, though that's when it would be foggy. In September, shouldn't be much of a problem, though. Winds usually pick up in the afternoon. No tellin when it might rain.

Sunset is around 7:45 that time of year, so there'll still be light at 8:00pm. But I'd expect they won't let you off the first tee after 3:30 - 4:00pm.

Bob, help me fine tune! I really don't see any other way to do our trip, but I don't know the area either.

I googled the jet boat trip, and WOW! The kids would LOVE it, but I'm not so sure I want to get soaked with cold water in mid May! Is it really worth $116? Are there any discounts that you know of? And how in the world could we fit in a half day excursion like that?

Okay, so we have from Saturday morning, May 17th when we leave Angel's Camp, CA. We were planning on leaving around 7:30 am. We want to see the southern Oregon coast, Redwoods NP, and the CA coast to San Fran.

Here's our current schedule:
Saturday night: Bandon
Sunday night: Brookings
Monday night: Trinidad, CA
Tuesday night: Mendocino
Wed night: near SFO

What would you do differently?

(and yes, the drive IS long from Angels Camp to Bandon, but we do a similar drive with the kids every couple of years when we go to Williamsburg, VA. The older they get, the easier it is.)

Thanks!!

Thanks bb.

I might try to through in Crater Lake (just to drive by and see it) on the drive from Bandon to Portland on our last day Friday.

I know it will be about 9 hours of driving, but if we do that, what's the fastest route from Bandon to CL and then CL to Portland?

Particularly like your Trinidad and Mendocino choices for your updated itinerary. Just hope you fully appreciate the fact that Hwy 101, both in Oregon and California, and California's Hwy 1 are not roads you can always make good time on, so it's probably best to give yourself some slack time in your schedule. I'm assuming you're planning to take Hwy 128 from Hwy 1 back to 101, via Booneville, in order to expedite your travel from Mendocino back to San Franciso.

Anyway, you'll see lots of beautiful and spectacular scenery.

Eugenite, you're not the first to suggest cutting over at 128. We'll definitely keep that in mind if we're running out of time, but would love to stay on the coast, even if it's just driving by.

Probably 42S/42 to I-5 at Winston, north to 138 at Roseburg, and up to the lake. This route into the park's north entrance, on the opposite side of the lake from all the tourism facilities. There's a viewpoint right there if that's all the time you've got, or, take a left at the "Y", heading in a clockwise direction around the lake. For different scenery on the return to Portland, exit where you entered, but head east on 138 to 97, north to 58, and northwest back to I-5 at Eugene. That route actually might be slightly quicker than returning back to I-5 the same way you came.

4Sharie,

I was robbing the extra day from the front half of your trip. The gold country seemed the perfect break up that day, but there isn't anyway to "steal" that day off the the rear end of your agenda - you are set up really very well...

As for the Lower Rouge Jet Boat trip... well, it is the high point of many peoples adventures in Oregon when locals have friends "out west". I was thinking about your kids, too - what memories. A real chance to see truly wild country, maybe a wild bear, be comfortable, safe and do something exciting and entirely different than you can do just about anywhere else. Yes, it seems expensive and yet no one I know has ever regretted going the first time, or recommending this to a visitor. Bandon to Brookings is a couple hours max drive, that time of year - plenty of light, time to walk a couple of beaches (and Arch Rocks view point) and you've got the near perfect day - and May should be warm up river almost certainly, but I'd pass ton the boat ride too should it be raining.

No one should recommend that as a viable thing to try - please reconsider, your time would be better spent heading up the coast and over at Lincoln City. Really.

beachbum is correct on all accounts. Also - September is the best and most stable month we have on the coast too. Winds die, crowds disappear, September is magical.

bb.....thanks. That's the route that the map sites also recommended. Good to have LOCAL confirmation.

bf.....yes, it's not ideal, but that might be our only chance to see the lake. We will be driving down the coast at the start of the trip.

I guess the question might be, as rushed as it is, is it worth it to at least see the lake? If we don't, we'll leave Bandon and head up I-5 back to Portland and really don't have much planned for that day, so I thought I'd try to squeeze CL in.

Bob, we were *really* starting to get excited about the jet boat tour. The noon-4:00 one would have worked out so well for our timeframe, but they're not running that one on May 18th! After doing some research, I can see why it's a hit! Very cool! thanks for mentioning it. Wish it would have worked out.
