Is 1 day enough time to see the main points of the gorge or should i plan 2 days. I would like to hike a bit but mostly just sightsee. Thanks

Yes, one day is fine as long as you get an early start. Must sees include the Portland Woman's Forum (odd name, but amazing views from here), Vista House, and Multnomah Falls. That is just the tip of the iceberg though since there are so many beautiful falls and trails, so just stop along the way at what interests you. If you are coming from Portland, take I-84 east and get off at exit #22, which is for Corbett. Head up the hill to the old scenic highway and then take a left. This will lead you to all 3 places I mentioned as well as so many falls and trails.

When we show visitors the Columbia River Gorge, we take I-84 to Corbett to access the Historic Columbia River Highway and drive that road as far as Moltnomath Falls (there are great views and several waterfalls along the way).

We return to I-84 and drive as far as the delightful town of Hood River. We walk around town, have lunch, and then we continue on I-84 to Biggs Junction and cross the Columbia River to Maryhill where, if time permits, we visit Maryhill Museum or Maryhill Winery.

We drive back to Portland on WA-14 for spectacular views of the gorge and Mt. Hood.

The drive on WA-14 is too often overlooked. On a recent trip to the area, driving south on 97, at a stop we met a young couple from the area who were on their way to Vancouver, WA. They had made the trip many times---always on I-84; never on WA-14. I suggested they give 14 a try. They said they would. I hope they did. It was a clear days. The views were spectacular.

Eagle Creek Trail-12 miles takes about 6 hours, is easy with not much elevation gain or loss. You pass 6 major major waterfalls. Tunnel Falls is near the end and is the best one. Punchbowl Falls is also on this trail. This isn't far from Multomah Falls. Really good hike
