Columbia, MS

Any ideas for interesting sites in or around Columbus, MS? We'll be there for a long weekend 6/23-6/26. Thanks!

Do you mean Columbia or Columbus? If Columbia, I've been there lots as it's my DH's hometown and though I know I should not be so blunt, truth is, I was never happier than when we were on our way out and headed back home again. :( Goodness. It might have been a great place to grow up, but not one where there are any/many "must dos" for a returning adult, other than visiting family and with that, eating wonderful home cooked southern comfort food that would put Paula Dean to shame.

Is it Columbia (title) or Columbus (original post)?

Columbus: http://www.columbus-ms.org/

Also, there are some great places near Columbia is you like history.

But most importantly right now, could you please tell us which of these 2 cities you will be visiting?

This is not coming up on the Mississippi board (so to speak). When you post about a particular area, highlight the state you are asking about (above the dialog box where you put your title), so Fodorites can find it when searching a particular state. I hope you are able to find this when you look for responses. Just click on your name if you ever lose threads you've started.

Good luck!

Mea culpa!

Sorry folks, you are right, it's Columbus, MS, near the Air Force Base, where my son is stationed.
Have a lot going on right now, but don't know how I missed that typo. Fodorites are so Sharp!

We've already checked into the Columbus website, & wanted to hear firsthand from you-all. I tried searching Fodors talk but didn't find anything.

Thanks in advance......

BayouGal-

Thanks for the link to Columbus. I was born there (moved away when I was 1) and I did go to the "W" for one semester.... but I didn't have cultural things on my mind!!!

I will be in that area this summer - criving my son to camp - so I mught just have to drive thru on my way back to New Orleans!!!!

Willy123 - definitely take a little time to walk around the MUW campus. It's beautiful. I still tend to refer to it as MSCW (Mississippi State College for Women) - even tho the name changed over 30 years ago - because my parents taught there, my aunt went there, etc.

Sorry, Willie. I can help with Columbia, but don't know too much about Columbus. Good luck!

Thanks for your replies. Is there any way to change this title to Columbus instead of Columbia? Or should I start a new thread?

We're looking for some local restaurants (including bbq of course! i.e. the columbus website shows Little Dooeys. Anyone know this one?) Any special place to take my son (and possibly friends) out to dinner?

Also we can't get a sense of the downtown area. All suggestions welcome. Thanks Grcxx3, we will try to tour the MUC campus, if the weather is not unbearable (all due respect to the southern climate)!

You'll need to start a new thread, and be sure you highlight "Mississippi" above the box where you put the title.
