Colorado's Mount Evans
 

How are the views from atop Mt. Evans? I also hear there's an abundance of wildlife to see is pretty incredible.

I was in a hurry on that one and apologize for the typo: I hear there's an abundance of wildlive to see THAT is pretty incredible. This is also a topper :)

You will see wildlife. You might see elk. You might see bighorn sheep. You will see mountain goats. You might have to sit in your car till they get off the road.<BR>The views are magnificent, as you'd expect at 14000+ feet. The drive up is also scenic.<BR>BUT...<BR>You'd better hurry. This time of year, the road can close at any time because of snow (in fact, I think it's been closed once already a couple of weeks ago because of snow). And it can stay closed for the rest of the winter.

On the clear day the view is pretty impressive. The only wild life you will see are mountain goats. However, they will literally walk right up to you; waiting for you to feed them (please don't).

Thanks Les and Paul, we're going up on Saturday and I'll call the Ranger's station to see if the road is open. I'm also hoping to see Echo Lake, assuming there's any water in it after this terrible drought. Thanks again Guys for your responses.

I went up this summer and there was a marmot hole in the middle of the road. The marmot keep sticking his head out, and it was hard to decide when to go over the hole. :-)

I was just up to Echo Lake this past weekend. Plenty of water in it. Also, the road to Echo Lake (from Idaho Springs) is generally open all winter. The road to Mt. Evans closes at Echo Lake.<BR>Paul, I respectfully disagree with your statement, as I have personally over the years seen all of the animals that I mentioned. In fact, there was recently (last year, if I recall correctly) a herd of 50 elk found dead on the side of Mt. Evans (lightning strike, they think).
