Colorado - Wild Animal Sanctuary

I have written several times in the past about my visits to the Wild Animal Sanctuary located outside Denver.

I made another trip today and the improvements since my trip last thanksgiving are amazing. The 'Mile into the Wild Walkway' is almost complete. The most recent extension opened 3 weeks ago and the last of the current project will open in a couple of weeks.

When we first went in 2009, you could only really observe the lions and tigers well. Now the bears, wolves, and smaller animals (fox, lynx, bobcat) are easy to observe.

We went on a Saturday morning when the animals were being fed so most were very active as they saw the 'chuck wagon' coming.

The bears were very active - saw two grizzlies 'sumo wrestling' for quite a while. The tigers were very active and vocal.

Admission is still only $10 for adults while I would say the value is at least twice what it was.
We spent about 2 hours. I could have stayed longer but 'the Stomach' - a.k.a. my son - needed to be fed.

The website was updated a few months ago and is very well designed.

Thanks for posting this info. We are going to this part of the world in June and have this on our list of places to visit. We especially love seeing animals in the wild but this would be great too.

We wouldn't have known about it except for your post, so thank you again.

bigtyke -

Thanks for posting this again. I've had this place on my radar since your original post, but as I only get back to CO from Australia once a year, I've yet to fit it in.

Next time maybe.

The road to the sanctuary is in the process of being paved. As a gravel road it wasn't too bad, but with the increased attendance, the county decided to pave it.

Here is a video showing two bears 'sumo wrestling'.
