Colorado Vacation Oct 18 - 26
 

Checking feasibility of a last minute vacation to Colorado in October (18-26). Would like to do SW CO, Mesa Verde, Ouray, Telluride, Durango, maybe up to Denver, RMNP, if enough is open to make worthwhile.

OR

maybe after SW Colorado, do Moab, Arches, Canyonland areas.

Two flight options may be Denver or Alberquere, there may be other convenient airport choices, and renting a car for travel in our chosen areas. Guess we'll need an SUV. Please let us know what worked for you this time of year and what you would recommend!

Thanks, Gretchen. We were concerned about the chance of icy road conditions in the mountains so thought maybe an SUV with M+S tires might be wise.

You're right to be concerned about the possibility of snow and ice in the high country because October is the start of winter up there. It will be well past foliage season by then, so most tourists will be gone. You should make sure to keep informed with weather forecasts if you're traveling over high mountain passes and be flexible with your plans if your run into bad weather.

Trail Ridge Road in RMNP will most likely be closed by then (although they do keep it open until the first significant snow which could happen later.) Nevertheless, the lower reaches of the park are open year-round on both the east and west sides and there is plenty to see.

If you're thinking of visiting Mesa Verde or Moab, this is a fantastic time of year to visit - much cooler but generally not too cold and you'll have the place to yourself.

Think you probably should stay focus on SW. A lot of driving between Denver/RMNP and Durango and the potential for weather problems is somewhat greater. But road maintenance is good, quickly cleared and sanded. At most it will slow you down some but not a major hindrance. AND if you are coming from the south, a 4 wheel drive vehicle for you could be more dangerous.
