colorado-ski in april?

The kids have spring break the first full week of April next year. What are our chances of decent ski conditions at that time of year?

Stephie Aug 12th, 2003 04:53 AM

Your chances are very good. We've been skiing in early April several times when the mountains have had their biggest "dump" of the year. Had some awesome skiing first of April. Of course that can't be gauranteed, but your chances for good skiing conditions are good. Be prepared for some ice and slushy conditions at the bottom of the ski runs, but hopefully your luck will be as good as ours has been. Incidentally we skied Copper Mountain and Vail those years.

Good Luck!

And cheap rates!!

Stephie is right; you have a very good chance for good snow. I would only add that you need to consider altitude. Those areas higher will have better snow. Some like Steamboat, Aspen that are at lower altitudes may not be as good as the higher resorts.

Thanks for the input; I think we'll check into this a little more.:)

mona, april is typically a GREAT month to ski at steamboat, contrary to what coskier says. it's also one of the best places to bring kids.

enjoy!

Try staying at Timber House Lodge in Winter Park. Breakfast and dinner are included, which makes it incredibly relaxing, and it has the friendliest guests. Very reasonably priced as well.

I live in CO and love it too... and I like the month of April. But good skiing!? - Sure we get lots of snow...but it's heavy wet stuff. And I think the skiing stinks.

julie, i've had some amazing powder days in April, even in May.

julie_Colorado Aug 14th, 2003 08:06 AM

That can be true.... but it isn't the norm . I wouldn't tell someone to come out and expect powder - I'm assuming at a pretty high expense. It probably won't happen. That being said, I love the sunny days in April. I just think we should do some expectation setting.

julie i don't want to split hairs but what i said was: "april is typically a GREAT month to ski at steamboat" i'm not sure how that is telling someone to come out and expect powder. unfortunately you can't count on powder at any time.

I also think early April is great skiing. BUT extremely variable - it could be 70 degrees and slushy spring corn snow (which I love) or it could dump a foot overnight with knee high powder (even better) but you never know. If its been hot and you want to ski early in am, just ski the higher terrain where it doesn't freeze up. Or just wait until 10-1030 when the snow loosens up.
