Colorado October 16-25, 2017

What kind of weather and road conditions might we expect if we visit RMNP and other mountainous areas of Colorado October 16-25?

The average closing date for Trail Ridge Road is October 23rd. The park keeps the lower part of the road open year round but the upper stretch may be permanently or temporarily closed by the time of your trip.

If there hasn't been a recent storm, expect the lower elevations to be fine for hiking.

Our son got married on October 12th in Denver. It was 75* and those gorgeous blue skies of Colorado. The next day we were going to Breck with friends to relax. Woke up to 3" of snow on the ground and snowing like a bandit. Drove on to the mountains. The next day in Breck (we went fly fishing) it was 17*, 6" of snow on the ground and clear. That is Colorado!!!

You can expect unpredictable weather.

Ditto the above, could be T-shirt or down parka weather. It would be safe to say "not hot".

Layered clothing.

IMHO, carry a lightweight shell layer at all times, even walking around town and it doesn't feel like you need one.

At this moment it is mid 40s in Denver and snowing hard in the mountains above 8500,9000 feet. So you to be prepared for a wide range of weather. By your dates most of the fall colors will be gone. Sorry.

Oct 16 - 25, are the dates for the OP's trip.

How was it, HTtY?

Today is September 28th. Let's wait until October 28th to ask the OP how it was...

Not sure what MoBro was gone with that comment.

On the TV, they are showing that a couple of the resort have turned on the snow guns. With a little luck we could be skiing by the 25th. A month to go. Time to polish the sticks. Breckenridge's base is 9000 feet so they are in the snow range.

For some reason, I keep thinking it's October already!

(Which could have been obvious, except for those who want to make a big deal about everything.)
