Colorado hiking
 

We are making a hurridly put-together trip to the Colorado Rockies to hike next week, in lieu of our cancelled trip to Italy. Our base is Breckenridge. Will anyone share their favorite hikes? We are reasonably fit, and can hike up to ten miles per day (after altitude acclimation). Also, suggestions on restaurants (not only in Breck)? Many thanks!

Kathy: Since you say you can hike up to 10 miles/day, I'm guessing you're a little more than reasonably fit. Quandry is a great 14er near Breck. While I believe it's only a class 2 hike, since it is above 14,000ft elevation, it takes a lot out of you. The Lincoln/Democrat/Cameron/Bross Quad out of Alma is great hike and a chance to see old mining claims. Also, above 14000 ft. There's several books on hiking Colorado 14ers. Could probably order one within a couple days from Amazon. Something easier, there's always hiking on the ski mountain. There should be info at the front desk of where ever you're staying. FYI - it is hunting season here. You'll want to stay on populated hiking trails and not wander off trail. b

Hey the weather has been awesome your going to love it. Hike , not sure of names but at the I-70 west Frisco exit off main street there is a trailhead that we love. Food. All time fav is the Ski Tip Lodge in Keystone. hopefully they will be open. if they are ask if they are having 2 for 1 dinners. Most places should be offering some disounts at that time. Pick up the summit daily news for more bargains. You can even get 2 for 1 massages you will earn it after all that hiking! <BR> <BR>We like Bubba Gumps for lunch but only if its nice enough to sit on the upstairs patio and its 2 for 1. Not worth it if not.

Two for one massages....ahhhhh!!! Thanks, Bly and Kima for your info! Yep, I've read about those 14ers...sort of a club I guess? I had heard of Quandry, and that may be one we attempt. Anyone else with suggestions?

just spent two weeks in colorado this past july. the best hike we did was just east of glenwood springs, called hanging lake. there is an exit off I-70, maybe 90 minutes west of breckenridge/frisco area. it's beautiful and worth the drive, the last 18 miles or so your in the glenwood canyon. i drove 1,000 miles in those two weeks and this was by far the coolest.
