Colorado, 2nd week in June

We (my husband and our 2 boys, 12 and 14)are considering Colorado and not sure what area....RMNP or Durango area. We can get cheap tickets into Colorado and don't mind driving....we have 7 full days. We enjoy hiking and fishing. I would like to find a cabin or something to serve as a base. Any suggestions??

Cheap tickets into Colorado - where? If Denver, it is a good 7 hour drive to Durango. If you want to go to Durango, Albuquerque [ABQ]is the closest major airpot [3 hours]. You can fly into Durango [DRO], but it's expensive. Lots of great things to do in and around Durango, family friendly, easy to get around and reasonable prices.

If you like fishing, why not go to Silverthorne/Breckenridge and fly fish the Blue River. There are outfitters in Silverthorne. The same is true of the Aspen area and the Roaring Fork River. In Aspen there would be good hiking just about anywhere, but Marroon Bells comes to mind.

I would look into flying into Colorado Springs. The airport is easy in and out, and about a 1/10th the size of DIA. Many things to do around the Springs (day trips)hiking, rafting, trains, moutain roads, etc. Durango is doable from Colorado Springs in one day, but I would split it up into two days with an overnight somewhere interesting in between. Any way you travel to Durango is spectacular scenery, and plenty to do around there also, including another train, and Mesa Verde, etc. Any questions, please hit me up.

Planning on staying 2 nights in Mesa Verde, and looking for lodging in Durango. Would prefer someplace where the kids can walk out the door and fish...or hike. Prefer budget..rustic cabin as long as it is clean with kitchen. Ideas for side/day trips: rafting, hiking, fishing/boating. Not sure about the train ride.
