College Professor Relocating To Washington, Bremerton Area (HELP)!!!!!!

Myself and 19 year old son are relocating from Tampa FL to the Bremerton area. My son was born in Tacoma while I was stationed at the Fort Lewis Army base there.....Please, somebody tell me about the Bremerton area and is there anything for a 19 year old to do who's interested in snowboarding, martial arts and basketball......he will attend one of the local community colleges or U of W.

Please help!!! We need all of the assistance that we can get....

WE ARE FINISHED PAYING FOR SUNSHINE!!!

Thanks

Bremerton would not be my choice of addresses on the Kitsap Peninsula, though the city is in the process of reinventing itself. Many of its residential districts are pretty gritty, though of course some areas are fine. I would look to the Poulsbo-Silverdale area, or south to Gig Harbor. Bainbridge Island is great if you can afford it. Any of these places will put you within easy reach of Seattle, either by ferry or by the newly-improved Tacoma Narrows Bridge.

Plenty of ski resorts are within a few hours drive of the area. I can't tell you much about martial arts or basketball, though. Those are fairly urban pursuits and the Olympic Peninsula is probably more appealing to young people with an interest in outdoor activities like hiking, sailing, fishing etc.

There are several Fodorites who live on the east side of Puget Sound; if there are any from Bremerton or Bainbridge Island I am not aware of it, so take this for what it is worth:

I spent about three minutes Googling "Bremerton + martial arts," "Bremerton + snowboard," and "Bremerton + community college" and came up with a bunch of hits. I can only suggest that you do the same.

From the west side of the Sound to the ski slopes is a long, long day, and if your son is amenable to the UW he must have accepted the possibility of living in the Seattle area. Expand your target.

Bobmrg - I am a "West Sounder" (from the Port Townsend area actually)!

Bremerton is nicer than it used to be, but I would still prefer a few other towns in the area over Bremerton. Silverdale/Poulsbo/Port Orchard are nicer IMO. Quite a few of our friends that are stationed in the area go snowboarding over at Hurricane Ridge. When they board or ski on the east side, they make weekend trips out of it because of the distance.
