Cold week-end coming--are your travel plans affected?
Watching Henry's severe weather report online (who is Henry, anyway?) and see that a cold week-end with lots of snow in some areas is coming up. Any Fodorites having to change their travel plans? Henry says my hometown area, the Lehigh Valley, may get the most snow. And it looks pretty chilly over large parts of the U.S.
FYI, my brain must be calcifying or I've been out of the country too long...I've forgotten what the full "Clipper" phrase is. Help me out! Is it Arctic Clipper, Northern Clipper, Canadian Clipper, or something else. My husband can't remember, either. |
My plans iclude standing by with my snowblower on Sat AM anxiously awaiting the flakes.
How about: Hair clipper Nail clipper Ad clipper Wood chipper or that famous constellation: The Big Clipper? OK so it feels like Friday to me. |
Woe is me. I had big plans to be poolside. Instead, it's the hot tub for me. We are getting some chilly weather in FL now but we have a little warm spell (highs in 70s) this wknd. Downright nasty!

Jack the Clipper
Edward Clipperhands Clipper Gore I wish it was Friday too Placeu2. |
I think it's an Artic Clipper, but this storm is going to be a big Nor'easter, which means a storm brewing on the coast and sending LOTS of snow. I just heard we are expecting 6" to 12" of snow in the next couple of days,...... sorry have to run........... and FIND THE BOOTS, they are buried at the bottom on my closet.
Have to run out for hot chocolate and milk and some cider, that's what is necessary for these cold nights. Add a little rum to the cider and a movie in the VCR, and you have a perfect night to stay IN. |
ALBERTA Clipper? They were calling the storms that came through the east coast (NY Metro area) that on the weather report last night...
Looking forward to the big Nor'easter this weekend. At least it's on a Saturday night with no work to go to on Sunday! Crank up the fireplace and get some goodies ready! |
Really tpatricco?? I live in Alberta and have never heard it called that. Wow, the things you learn on here. We just experienced one of the coldest winter snaps we have had in a very long time, record setting low temps. I wonder if that is why they called the Alberta Clipper, because it seemed to originate here? Who knows. |
Very good tpa! At least here in the Chicago area, it is indeed called an Alberta Clipper!
|
Well, I'll be a monkey's ....
Never, ever heard that. Guess we are famous for something other than Wayne Gretzky. |
Yes, the cold weather is affecting my plans. For weekends, I plan going to the movies or lectures or anything inside as opposed to a walk by the bay or a picnic.
Henry? I am still trying to figure out who is Waldo. Now it's Henry. The VII? The one who killed his wives? |
Yep, that's what they were calling it...Alberta Clipper. I gather the reason is that's where it comes from!
A quick google search yields this info: http://www.weathernotebook.org/trans...000/02/15.html |
This weekend I plan to travel from my bed to my couch to my refrigerator to my computer. I'm looking forward to this relaxation at home. No one had better affect these plans, by inviting me to a party or something. Noooo....I don't want to go out in the cold.
Now NEXT weekend there had better not be any bad weather...I'm taking a long-awaited trip to Turks & Caicos. Yeee-ha! I haven't taken a week off since May. |
I'm suppose to travel upstate NY this weekend but I can't tell how bad the weather will be on saturday and sunday. All the reports say snow showers. What does that mean? 2 inches or a foot?
|
Thanks for posting that tpatricco! Funny, the cold weather that arrives in Alberta is called an Arctic low. Even though it leaves here and travels somewhat southeast, it does originate in the Arctic. We just get the infamous name!
:-) |
Ahhh yes, I remember good ole Alberta Clipper! Something to dread if you had to walk down a NYC street. Or attend a family function in Westchester :D
I wonder if Florida is going to feel anything? We have had some cold days and nights ( for Fl) 29 the other night! Almost had to go find my woolies! My travel plans: Walk the dog along the St Johns River Go to dinner in Riverside and walk around and window shop after. Go to the Beach LOL |
Cool! the weather site I use says NYC will get a significant winter storm!
Does that make anyone happy? |
NO, but your travel plans make me envious
|
LOL, no , don't be envious, you too can live in Florida :D
Although our weather will only be in the 70s for Saturday, Sunday will be raining. But that is fine, sleeping late on a rainy Sunday morning is one of my favorite pasttimes ~ |
not really, but my travel plans for the weekend mostly consisted of walking 8 blocks over to my friend's house to watch movies, and I think I can handle doing that in the snow ;)
|
We are travelling up to Grass Valley tomorrow. The only thing I am concerned about is fog in the Sacramento valley. I checked the weather report and morning fog is predicted on Sunday, burning off by afternoon, which means even if we hit the fog on the way home, it shouldn't be the pea soup variety.
