I am going to Colorado to Pikes Peak and am thinking of going to the top on the cog train. Has anyone been on it and is it worth it or should I drive?

We really enjoyed it and it's quite the beautiful view not only at the top but on the way up. I would definately recommend it.

I've done both (drive and the cog railway) and can recommend both. If you are going anytime soon, your only option will likely be the railway. We did the train about a month ago and the road was closed due to snow. Not sure I would want to drive that road in snow anyway. I think you are better off driving in nicer weather as the appeal of driving is being able to stop at your leisure for pictures and such. The train is much more relaxing, though more expensive, and in my view didn't provide enough time on top before you had to re-board and head back down. Even so, it's a worthwhile trip.

Been there, did that, worth it:

Loved it. I recommend going on the early train, you will see the most wildlife on the trip. Take a jacket no matter what time of year or how the weather is at the base.

hands done, one of the coolest things ever. i was 12, and won't soon forget it. just bring a sweatshirt for the top. even though it was 72 degrees on the bottom, it was 40 degrees at the top, and my father went sweatshirt less to keep me warm.

Funny! Just got done posting about the cog in the " Denver / Rocky Mountain National Park / Pikes Peak" thread when I saw this post. You can check out some comments there.

It's a fun trip and excellent advice above about the weather--it is consistently about 30 degrees colder at the summit than the bottom. I'd also recommend getting a seat towards the front so you can hear the conductor better as he gives his talk. I've done it 2-3 times and on one of the trips he was very difficult to hear over the speakers.
