Kal's article quotes mid-2018 for a reopening date. That sounds far more likely imo than the 2017 date claimed by the HNN story and developers.

I'm looking forward to seeing some work getting done on this property. We drive by it every trip - what an eyesore! I'm pleased to read that Hyatt will be redeveloping this historic property.

Kal, last we heard they were (or maybe already had) built an overpass between the Seashell Restaurant and resort, to alleviate much or hopefully most of the street traffic to/from the beach. Time will tell how or if it works, but at least the claims are that the impact on area traffic will be minimal. Let's please also remember the Coco Palms has grandfather rights on this site and on Kauai, it was here long before any of the current resorts or most other infrastructure on the island. Fortunately the undeserved grumblings of overdevelopment are being lost in the din of celebration over 1800 new jobs. |
We stayed at the Coco Palms in 1962, on our honeymoon. I still remember the outrigger canoe beds and how uncomfortable they were on our bad sunburns--but everything else was just fine and beautiful.

@fdecarlo...we were there just a month ago. Cleared away some overgrowth at The Seashell Resto on the other side of the hiway but nothing else.
I think the story goes that there was a bridge at one time but they took it down when they were hauling stuff up north and the the trucks were too big. After Bob Jasper's tour we went and bought the book he recommended, The Story of the Coco Palms Hotel: The Grace Buscher Guslander Years 1953-1985 by Dave Penhallow. Might be time to take a peek at it again. |
I was there many years ago, a magical place.

Kal, we just read the overpass was part of a former and now abandoned development plan, I think the last one before this current one. But I could have sworn I read the local council approved it, and imo it's a great idea.
