I just returned from Hawaii, our 5th time. We've never had a problem with roaches in rental car until this time with Alamo in Oahu. They were baby roaches.

We used Avis in Maui and had no roaches. Well, the car has only 5000 miles.

I would advise against using Raid in the car. Sure, you'll kill some roaches, but you're probably causing damage to yourself and/or your kids (especially little ones!). I would go the roach bait trap route. You won't get noxious fumes that way. The bait traps take a day or so to work, but I'd rather wait than fumigate myself!

Why go to the desert and then bitch about the sand?

You people are SO lame.

Once you have roaches in a car it is virtually impossible to get them out. We have lived in Hawaii for several years and have no roaches in our car, despite the fact they love the tropical environment and the car is often parked in places with hundreds of roaches running around. The solution? Never eat any food of any type in your car. Once a few crumbs slide under the seat or into the fiber of the carpet it is only a matter of time before you get roaches. Once the car has them it will always have them. Raid may kill a few but others will take their place and repopulate your car.

Given that most people have a snack or two in their rental car it is almost certain all rental cars will have roaches. They aren't too active during daylight hours, but at night, lookout!

How can you be sure to get a new rental car? Is a Jeep better than a car? If you get roaches? Can't you just ask for another car?

Just got back from Kauai June 5 - Our minivan from Dollar Rental was infested with roaches. I knew there was a chance that our car might have bugs - but it was still awful and they DO CRAWL on you. I kept my feet up. By the way Dollar rental made us get a car seat for our 7 year old. We were told it was a new law. Is this accurate?
