Coastal oregon drive
 

we will be spending 2 nights in cannon beach and 2 nights in Yachats. we want to break up the drive between them and are looking for a place to stay for 1 night.

Came up with lincoln city. any suggestions for motels? this will just be a stopping point, so doesn't have to be that fancy. but not real cheap either.

or any other place to stay to break up the trip that is roughly half way between?

That isnt a very long drive. Just check out of your hotel in CB mid morning and have breakfast there. Then drive down towards Yachats making stops as you like. Lincoln City is the Oregon coast at its worst (imo).

Okay.... but Seaside runs a close second. ;-)

As rparis says, Lincoln City - Yachats is less than 1.5 hours, so I'm not sure why you'd overnight there. Depoe Bay or Newport are much nicer, but closer yet. You might consider this place, though: http://www.innatcapekiwanda.com/. It's at the south end of Three Capes Scenic Loop. If you're taking your time from Cannon Beach, it probably makes sense.

So.... Overleaf Lodge in Yachats? How about Cannon Beach?

bb, is the really scenic part of the drive south of Bandon that stretch between Port Orford and Gold Beach?

Or do you need to continue down to Brookings? I have us going all the way down to Brookings one afternoon, but am looking to cut out some areas due to time constraints. We would just be doing the drive, no activities.

Also, is Tillamook worth a stop for an hour or so? Or is it just a drive through town? Is Cannon a better place to spend an hour or so? We may not have time to do both towns.

LOL, I think Seaside is the worst thing on the OR coast.

Cannon Beach vs Tillamook is a nobrainer...CB hands down! Tillamook has the cheese factory if you are needing to kill time. Or the aviation museum. But if time is limited, then CB is the sensible option. Haystack Rock is excellent, and if you can work it around low tide even better. They have docents during those times, and it is quite interesting. Also Ecola State Park on the north edge of CB is beautiful, with great hiking.

When you see the beaches just north of Port Orford, you'll be tempted to spend any time you have there. And that would be just fine. But, you'd miss places like this: http://www.pbase.com/smg9774/image/48337652. If you're crunched for time, no need to go all the way to Brookings, though. Part of the fun of this section is the surprise at what you encounter when following the countless viewpoint signs. Just turn around when you're out of time.

We'll definitely be going at least down to Gold Beach. Guess we'll see about the time when we get there and may turn around.

we want to stop between cannon beach and yachats so we have time to thorouhly explore and enjoy all the sights on the way down. seems like there is a lot if you are into birding and photography.

inn at cape kiwanda getting mixed reviews at trip advisor I think. Unless mixing it up wiht another place. anyone stayed there lately?

but guess you think the area itself is better? the location is better.

I think what we're saying, Joanel, is that, first, it's only a 3.5 hour drive direct from Cannon Beach to Yachats, and second, you likely won't like Lincoln City or any of the lodgings there. So, unless you want to drive as far as Newport (only 25 miles from Yachats), Inn at Cape Kiwanda probably makes the most sense.

I would never want to spend that much time in Canon Beach or Yachats. Given the question is where to spend time between Canon Beach and Yachats, I feel the best answer hands is &quot;Three Capes Loop&quot;. It is unique because it is away from Hwy 101 (West of it) gorgeous and much much quieter.

PS the great southern Or beaches are just South of Port Orford - not North, until you get to Bandon anyway.

Two nights in Cannon Beach and two nights is Yachats sounds leisurely and delightful to me.

Gower Street Bistro is a great place for dinner in Cannon Beach.

I'm sorry I can't advise where to stay in Lincoln City. We once stayed at the Inn and Spanish Head. We liked the room and the view, but not the restaurant.

In Lincoln City, we always look forward to lunch on the deck at Kyllo's.

Spend one day in Yachats exploring Highway 101 as far south as Florence. You will find Cape Perpetua, Hecta Head Lighthouse, the Sea Lion Caves, on this beautiful stretch of road.

I would not add the Gold Beach-Brookings leg.

cape kiwanda - plan to stay there for one night. any good places for breakfast. (maybe dinner also) the pub attached to the place appears to be so-so

The Pelican Pub is great for lunch or dinner. Right by the water, and if it is nice there is seating on the deck

Stayed in Cape Kiwanda in September...very comfortable and fun to walk on the dunes. Good breakfast in pub across the road. Also loved Depoe Bay, stayed at Inn at the Rock...just a beautiful location. Very small town, just a few restaurants, but you could eat in the room. They even take pets.

Agree with happytrailstoyou, Gower St. Bistro is very good, Bistro and Newman's @ 988 are also nice options for meals in Cannon Beach, 10 minutes away is Seaside where there is the Yummy Wine Bar and Taste of Tuscany, two great places to dine on the coast! ***kim*** ((#))

If you make it over to Gearhart, about 15 minutes from Cannon Beach, the McMenamins just took over the Sand Trap restaurant in Gearhart, we may be trying it soon as we are in Seaside at our beach cottage this week. ***kim*** ((f))
