Coastal NC/Va/MD (roadtrip)
Hi travelers!
My friend and I are planning a roadtrip. Our stops include Cape Hatteras, Williamsburg, Edenton (for a friend's baseball game) and possibly Chincoteague? We are looking for other options instead of Chincoteague. Any coastal towns/cities you recommend? We may want to camp. Please help! Thanks! |
My business partner just visited Chincoteague for Memorial Day weekend, albeit he didn't camp but stayed at a friend's house. Beaches were beautiful and almost deserted. Might be worth checking out.

I'm not a camper, but there was a thread recently about camping on the Outer Banks.
Edenton is historic (one of the first towns in NC) and famous for the Edenton Tea Party. I'm guessing there are tours of the town. Nearby (I don't have a map in front of me so I don't know how close) is Bath. Another old, historic NC town. |
MPaulas, Which direction are you coming from?
|
Kiptopeke, VA on the eastern shore (just north of the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel in VB) has a nice state campground with a beach. Also, nearby is a wildlife reserve, and a place which rents kayaks (we have kayaked over to the barrier islands which are all deserted and great for shelling).

depending on how far up you want to go, you may want to push on to annapolis, gorgeous town.

Coming from Chicago -- thoughts?

Driving from Chicago?
If so, Shenandoah National Park would be a great stop (in VA) right off of Interstate 64. Beautiful hikes and waterfalls - nice campgrounds. Other options on Eastern Shore - Cape Charles - some very nice bed and breakfasts in historic small town. Tangier Island - little island in the chesapeake bay where you can take a boat for a day trip or stay overnight. |
