COASTAL ISLANDS OFF OF GEORGIA --- ST. SIMONS OR JEKYLL OR?
We will be on an organized bike trip from Charleston to Savannah in late October/early November.....we are done midday on a Saturday, and rather than flying directly home, I thought it might be fun to see either St. Simons or Jekyll Island as we have never been before.....Is the best way to get there renting a car? Is it worth it for just part of a day/staying overnight and then leaving for the west coast on Sunday? I assume we could fly home from and return a rental car at Brunswick Airport.....Are we trying to combine too many things in such a short time? Please advise.....What is a really nice hotel in either St. Simons, Jekyll or an island that I'm not even listing? What will weather be like on the barrier islands in early November? Thanks so much for any advice you might have.

I absolutely loved our stay at Jeckyll. We cycled the island and enjoyed some great meals. I will top my trip report for you. I encourage you to also check out trip reports from a couple of other posters which you can find by clicking on the state name.

Jekyll is mostly a state park with an historic site (homes of the rich 1900-1920, mostly) and very quiet. Lovely for biking if you haven't just biked a long distance.
If you are ready to be a bit pampered, St Simons or Sea Island is much the better choice.

Jekyll is my favorite. It is an easy drive down from Savannah.Brunswick airport is small. Return fares might be better if you drove back to Savannah or on the Jacksonville, Fla.
You have about an 85% chance of fantastic weather on Jekyll at that time of year. It could be cold and rainy but that is the chance you are taking on your organized bike tour.

We love Jekyll Island too. (Been going there for over 25 years). We always stay in condos at Villas by the Sea, but I don't know whether that would be a good option for you. We haven't stayed in the fairly new Hampton Inn and Suites, but it sounds nice. There's also the Jekyll Island Club, but it's in the historic district and not on the water. (We prefer being on the beach.)
Note: Southwest Airlines fly out of Jacksonville and it might be worth checking their fares if they fly into your home city on the West Coast.

The "really nice hotel" in that area is the Cloister on Sea Island, which is a short bridge from St. Simons. The next nicest hotel is the Lodge on St. Simons, the sister property of the Cloister.

The Hampton Inn may be a very nice Hampton Inn, but it is light years away from the Cloister. There aren't many real luxury, old money style resorts around much any more. The Cloister resort and Sea Island are VERY different from a Hampton Inn or Jekyll. Both are "nice" depending on what you are looking for, but they are not interchangable.
