Nob Hill Hotel (or budget option) in San Francisco?
Has anyone stayed at the Nob Hill Hotel, on Hyde Street between Bush and Sutter? My son and daughter-in-law are considering it, but I'm a bit concerned about the location, which seems to be on the edge of the Tenderloin. Is the area safe? They're looking for an inexpensive hotel with some charm--and they like to walk, so it doesn't have to be in the middle of things. Any ideas would be appreciated!

I wouldn't stay there - though not because of the location so much. Have you looked at TA? Fully 50% of the reviews are 'poor' or 'terrible' - and 'terrible' is the largest category by a long ways . . .
It is listed 149 out of 241 SF hotels, and looking at the reviews I'm surprised it ranks that high.

How much are they paying per night, and when will they be here? Can't say you'll necessarily find something with charm, but you might find something nice in a better neighborhood for a decent price using either hotwire or priceline.

I am on Travelzoo's mailing list and they send out notices of special travel deals. I noticed the very nice Fairmont Hotel on Union Square going for $149 a night (certain dates).

I noticed they offered a standard room at the Kabuki Hotel (Japantown) for $110 a night. This is next to several bus lines, which would make it easy to get around. It is in an interesting neighborhood, close to restaurants, shopping, jazz club, cinema.

I think this hotel is a timeshare, not a full-time hotel. I live in that area, it's safe, but sort of boring. A good Italian restaurant in the hotel, food store (Cala Foods) 2.5 blocks away.
You can put your dates in Expedia, sort by price, click on the map (on the right) and see which hotels are cheaper.

Have you used Priceline?

We stayed at the Columbus Motor Inn just recently and found it to be ideal in every way. Good sized rooms, excellent location in North Beach area close to transport and not very expensive. If they are travelling by car, it is one of the few places in SF that offers free parking.

They won't be traveling by car, but that's a good tip (free parking). I think they're looking at the Joie de Vivre chain of hotels, which includes the Kabuki: They appear to be good value for the money. I like the fact that on Tripadvisor.com you can click on "Check Rates & Availability" and search many sites at once (Expedia, Priceline, Booking.com). I'll try Dayenu's tip about Expedia, too: That sounds like a good way to search.

Update: They ended up staying at the Hotel Triton, right across from the Chinatown gate, and loved it! It wasn't particularly quiet, but for two young people in San Francisco for the first time, it was a treat--and a great location. They were given a corner room with windows that overlooked the gate, and they felt like they were getting the real San Francisco experience, bless them!

There is the Castle Inn in the Russian Hill neighborhood. We liked it there. It has no charm whatsoever, but the rooms are clean and nice, it is well run and the area is safe. Free indoor parking is a big plus. Walkable to Chinatown and the Pier if one likes to walk. Buses nearby and Cable car one block away makes things very convenient.
