Clothing for Boston and the Cape
 

Hello,
We are going to be in Boston, Cape Cod and Newport in the middle of June. We are coming from the SF bay area - so we are not used to humity... but need to know how hot these places will be. Especially for the evenings. Will we need any type of jackets or sweaters? Or are the evenings warm? Thanks for your help.

Best bet is to check the forecast online before finalizing your packing, taking care to pack for the high and low temps. In mid-June, high temps will occur only a few hours in the afternoon, and temps typically drop significantly with the sun. Early mornings could be chilly. Or, there could be a heat wave - you never know. And, if there's rain, it will seem cooler. You will need outerwear for evenings, and if you plan to go on any boat rides.

It cools off quickly as soon as the sun starts to go down, or even when you just step into the shade. The sea breeze can also significantly cool things down. For mid-June, I wouldn't be too concerned about too hot. Wear layers.

Short-sleeves or long-sleeves Ts during the day, a light sweater for the evening.

Cape Cod temperatures in mid-June are not that different than summer in SF - it is rarely hot, hot and ocean breezes often keep it 10 or more degrees cooler than Boston. You will need to bring a warm fleece type thing plus something water repellant. But also shorts, short sleeves.

Boston mid-June is usually perfect - warm, not hot; rainy spring is usually over. Think 70-80 during the day but cooler in evening. Or it could be like June a few years back and rain every day and never make it above 65 or so - everyone had planted stuff the end of May and it all rotted.

Newport is somewhere inbetween.

Not usually swimming weather in the ocean - ocean temps are never very warm here and certainly not in June. But could be nice beach weather.

Think Bay Area in March.

Layer, Layer, Layer....could be cool 60's and windy, 80's warm and sunny, or rainy then sunny, then foggy! All within one day, especially if you move from the immediate coast to inland locations on the Cape. A light wind/rain jacket is a must. Tee shirts, sweatshirts, shorts, cropped pants and jeans will get you anywhere. Forget heels on the Cape...you'll just sink into the sand!

Definitely bring a sweater and jacket. Our restaurants are always freezing in the summer!
And yes, the evenings cool down significantly, especially along the shore.
