We used to take our dog down to Cape May - they are (were?) allowed on the bay side beach south of town, but not on the ocean beaches. I think dogs are allows on some beaches on Island Beach State Park as well.

Dogs were allowed at one time in Seaside Park. When I was there several years ago. A certain section at least.

Thanks everyone, for the "doggie on the beach" answers.

MIG - last year we drove from Ocean City all the way down to Cape May looking for a beach to take our little wirehaired dachshund for a walk, and became increasingly frustrated with each mile we travelled. We wanted to see what his reactions to the waves would be. We ended up on the bay side of Cape May where he enjoyed sniffing all the smelly things on the beach and in the rocks, but it just wasn't the same without the waves crashing. I suppose we'll have to make another trip after season. Peace.

Most of the beaches allow dogs after Labor Day weekend. Some also allow you to drive your vehicle on them at that time.

To all: Be very careful about dogs on the beaches in NJ. Ocean City for example, may not enforce the dog ordinance in the off-season but it's still in effect and off-season 4WD's on the beach require a special tag which is strictly enforced. As a dog owner, I hate to admit that these towns have a strong case for these dog restrictions- in-season abuse is inexcuseably bad.
