Closest & Most Convenient Airport to Catalina Island

While I think LAX is the nearest airport to San Pedro or Long Beach for access to the Island, would it be the most convenient? Or, should I fly in to Burbank or ???

Island Girl, it seems like every week there is some other problem at LAX. I would avoid it if at all possible. The Orange County John Wayne Airport is very near Dana Point where you can also take a ferry to Catalina.

Thanks. I would rather travel a few extra miles than get caught in a congested airport mess! Didn't consider Dana Point as an option for island access, either!

I guess Long Beach airport would offer the closest access to Catalina Island. However, flights and airline choices are not that great. Newport is another location that has ferry service to Catalina but it only leaves and comes back once a day. The best island access is thru San Pedro or Long Beach - more frequent departures and shorter transit times to the island than either Dana Point or Newport.

We go to Catalina a lot during the summer. When we need to go at odd hours or quickly we take Island Express Helicopters. It only takes 15 minutes and it drops you off very close to Avalon. It's expensive at $121 round trip, but definately convenient. They leave from San Pedro. Look at www.visitcatalina.org for all the transportation options.
