Clinton New Jersey
We will be in Clinton New Jersey in April of 2005. My Mom passed away and I would like to spread some of her ashes in the family plot at the Riverside Cemetery in Clinton.
We are planning to be in the area for about a week and were looking for suggestions on some interesting sights in the area. We are planning to be in NYC for a few days and will be flying in and out of Newark and renting a car.
We love history, interesting architechture, antiquing and interesting food.
Can you give me some suggestions on how to spend some time in this area??? Would Philly be a good choice?? Thanks in advance. |
This part of New Jersey is rife with cute little towns. You will also be about 1 1/2 hours from Philly. An easy commute as long as you avoid rush hour. Flemington is about 15 minutes south, the town that was the home of the Lindberg Baby kidnapping trial. Its main street has some lovely Victorian homes and The Union Hotel where it is rumored to have a ghost haunting the upper levels. You can get a decent meal there. It is right across from the courthouse where the trial took place. If your into shopping there is a large outlet center there. Another 1/2 hour south is Lamberville and just across the water in PA, New Hope. Both are secnic, have good antiqueing, and some more then exceptional restaurants. New Hope is more artsy whereas Lambertville has better antiques. (IMHO) If you prefer hiking and nature, the Delaware Water Gap is about 45 minutes north and has some great trails and hiking. Clinton itself is a cute town and has a couple of good restaurants.
My condolences on the loss of your Mother. I recently returned my Mothers ashes to her beloved Beaver Island, MI. If it matters, kudos to you for doing that. Just remember that NJ's weather can be changeable in April. So check the forecast before packing. |
Thanks for the weather heads up. Maybe we should plan on May instead?
All the little towns sound like just what we are looking for. There was also a write up in the Los Angeles times today about the Fishkill area north of NYC. We might spend a few days there too. Thanks again |
jaspertl,
Jersey gave you some excellent suggestions for our part of the country. Between the small towns and villages in Hunterdon County in NJ and those in Bucks County, PA, you should have many quaint places to visit. Antique shops abound in this area, as do great restaurants. You didn't mention where you plan to stay, but there are also numerous B&B's close to Clinton, especially in some of the towns along the Delaware. I also think that early May would be a better time to visit. Main Street Clinton is lined with flowering trees that should be beautiful then. I noticed from your past posts that you enjoy hiking, and we have some outstanding places that you might enjoy while combining it with your interest in history. If you have more specific questions or would like additional info on the area, feel free to contact me at [email protected] Even though the purpose of your visit isn't pleasure, I'm sure you'll enjoy your visit to the "other New Jersey." |
Clousie,
Thanks for the additional information. I've printed everything out and now need to get out the map to see where everything is located. I was thinking of April because it will be a year since my Mom passed but I don't think she d mind if we decided to wait until May! :0) The idea of the flowers being in bloom is very appealing! Thanks again! |
May is pretty here in Central NJ and IMHO a better month to visit. As Clousie says, we will be in bloom then and it is lovely.
