Cleveland questions

My friend is meeting her parents there as it is a halfway point to hand off a child. They need a safe, clean, basic hotel -- on the order of a Hampton Inn or Best Western -- but they don't know what neighborhoods/locations are appropriate. Any suggestions?

Also -- any suggestions for meet-up locations? The Flats still good?

TIA!

My girlfriends and I stayed at the Comfort Inn Downtown on Euclid Ave several years ago and it was fine. No problems with the neighborhood and everything was nearby. The rooms were fine (not five star but clean and comfortable).

The Tower City Shopping Center, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and the Flats were all within ~1 mile. All short cab rides or walks. We had a blast at the Flats.

The Flats are not what they used to be.
Up at the top of this page, in the little block beside 'search this forum', type in Cleveland Hotels. There in a lot of information regarding Cleveland that will come up that is really useful.

It might help to know where both parties are arriving from. There are some places near 480/Rt.77 that might meet your criteria. Not too far from the zoo if that would be of interest for something to do.

I would say to avoid the Flats.

Hi Lisettemac, If you friend is just going to Cleveland for the child transfer, I would recommend staying near the airport. 1-71 is close by, and 1-90 is not far. Downtown would be about a 10 minute drive from this area depending on traffic. The airport is on the westside of Cleveland. There are a lot of chain hotels nearby. Holiday Inn, The Marriott, Hampton Inn etc. The flats are no longer a good place to go. It seems people go out more now in the West 6th "warehouse" district.

Yes, they are just going for a child transfer. One side is coming from W Kentucky and the other side is coming from CT. So, I'm thinking the airport area might be a good choice.

As for things to do, the Zoo, Cedar Point, Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, anything else?

Maybe a cruise on the Lake? The Goodtime or Nautica cruise lines have short or dinner cruises in the summer. I like the Tremont area for dinner. It is on the near West side. We like "Fahrenheit" alot. There are also other bars and restaurants right in that area, for drinks afterward. Don't know what your interests are, but the Art Museum is good. Also, love the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Playhouse district, for live theater. If you don't mind taking a ride, maybe 45min. or so, there is Blossom Music Center. It is an outdoor pavillion with a huge lawn area, where you can take in a concert, if this trip will be in the summer. If they are going to the ROck and Roll Hall of Fame, the Science center is right there also. They have an omnitheater which is fun too.

If it were me, I think I'd still vote for the 480/77 location (about 7-8 mi south of Cleveland, at the Independence/Rockside road areas) over the airport area. Here's a link to some places in the general Cleveland Area: www.travelcleveland.com. Your friend would probably hit traffic in both locations if arriving around rush hour.

As far as fun things to do, R&R Hall of Fame, Science Center, Cedar Point. There's also a Six Flags amusement park in Aurora which is east of Cleveland although I think Cedar Point is way better. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park has some nice hiking trails and Canal history if interested in that sort of thing. BTW, the Cleveland Museum of Art is currently closed for a major renovation.
