Clearwater or ST.Pete's Senior lady needs info on "nice" motel or hotel --"resorts"s sound too expensive!!

I think the Resort type places are wonderful but usually too expensive for my budget--I plan to rent a car and do a lot of sightseeing--museums,historical and must walk about 2 miles a day (due to arthritis problems)
I would really like a place by the beach OR with a view of the beach or water.
I did a "search" and found lots of good info, although some back to 1999 !!!
Most of the threads were about resort s and family accomodations.
I am willing to drive 5 to 15 miles either way from Clearwater if it means less money or an exceptional place.
I am hesitant to use Priceline as you don't know what you are getting before you pay.
Also due to some health problems sometimes I have to change plans and therefore am out the money I paid for lodging.
Advice much appreciated..
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Frances is your heart completely set on Clearwater and St. Petes? I would personally suggest going further south.
Fort Myers or even further south.

How long will you be in Clearwater? There are rentals available in Senior Villages that are just beautiful!

We stayed at a small hotel/apartment complex on the back bay called the New Yorker. A couple of blocks from the beach, clean and quiet. There are dozens of motels/apartments on the back bay which are reasonable.

About 6 years ago I stayed at the Sea Wake Best Western on Clearwater Beach. I did not expect much since it was a very reasonably priced chain hotel.

We were pleasantly surprised! The location was perfect, near the end of the beach, kind of isolated and away from the crowds. Pelicans and other beautiful sea birds seemed to Congregate there. There was a wonderful ocean front restaurant. A very nice landscaped lighted walkway with a large wooden bench to watch the sunsets. Clean, nicely furnished ocean front rooms and a friendly helpful staff. If I were staying again in Clearwater Beach I would definitely go back there.

Frances,

Don't eliminate the Priceline idea altogether. True, you don't get your "choice" of hotel. However, if you are bidding on a 4 or 5 star or a resort hotel, chances are you are not going to be disappointed - but you are going to save $$ on a nice establishment.

My suggestion would be to go to www.biddingfortravel.com. This is a website totally devoted to Priceline bidding. You can see what others have bid and what hotels they got. If you read the website closely, I think you will be less afraid of bidding for a hotel on Priceline!!! Give it a gander!

We stayed at a small hotel called the Alden which is right on St. Pete beach.
They accept AAA discounts and were very reasonable. It is a very clean friendly place, near restaurants, and other shops.
Our parents lived across the street, and we stayed at the Alden atleast 5 different times. It's address is on Gulf Blvd.
