Civil War battlefields area

We're looking to spend a day or two in the Frederick area. Looking for recommendations of places to stay. We checked on the Antrim in the area but they are booked the days we are looking at. Also what would you recommend seeing in the area?

I stayed overnight at the Red Horse Inn. Nice place.

I assume you mean Frederick, MD. If that is what you mean, by all means see Gettysburg. It is less than an hour away and well worth an entire day.

The Antrim is lovely...however, since they are booked consider the Inn at Buckeystown. have a great trip!

It is only 22 miles toSharpsburg & Shepherdstown--Antietam battlefield. It is smaller area than Gettysburg but very interesting, Gettysburg is 50 miles has great Visitors center.
Harpers Ferry is also close . It is a small town with very limited parking but has a shuttle to the downtown area. Lots of shops and a good "walking" town.
FYI Frederick is the 2nd largest town in MD-for some reason this surprised me??? (Baltimore being the largest)
When you get back let us know about the trip....my daughter is going to the area in Oct.
Good luck

If you decide to go to the Antietam Battlefield, check to see if there's an opening at the Piper Farm B&B onsite. I no longer have contact information, but since the building was Longstreet's headquarters during the battle, the NPS should be able to help you. Also in while in Frederick, check out the Civil War medical museum there.

I stayed at the Piper House a few years ago on the Antietam Battlefield and really enjoyed it. From Frederick, it is only about 30 minutes to G'Burg and Antietam, so it makes a good base for visiting the two battlefields. Also within easy reach are Harper's Ferry and Manassas (site of two battles).
