Car services for New york city
Can anyone recommend a car service in New York City That would be competitively priced with Taxis from JFK airport. I don't like the idea of the meter running in traffic. I think there should be a flat rate to the airport No add on's

According to the JFK website there is a flat fare to Manhattan. See http://www.panynj.gov/airports/jfk-t...n-service.html

there IS a flat rate from JFK to manhattan.
Between JFK and Manhattan -- Flat Fare is $52 to the first destination (plus tolls and tip). The taximeter and receipt should reflect that this trip is a flat fare. There is no $1 peak time or 50-cent night surcharge for these trips.*

The taxi fare from JFK to Manhattan IS a flat fare - no meter running. So no need for a car service. But there are 2 add-ons. The passenger is required to pay the bridge or tunnel toll - unless you take the 59th St Bridge (but this may be out of your way). And a 20% tip is expected. (But both these charges also apply to a car service.)
If you want a car service (but I don't like them FROM the airport since it can be complicated and time-consuming connecting with them) go with either Carmel or Dial 7. They are both huge and you can find discounts on their web sites. (But we do take car services TO the airport, so we don;t have to search for taxis in the street with our luggage.)

As nytraveler says, there are two main car services in NYC, Dial 7 and Carmel. Both are reliable and good. But I also agree that it's generally not a good idea to take a car service FROM JFK since you usually have to wait longer for the car than you wait in the taxi line. However, you do save a bit of money off the cost of a taxi, about $8. If you decide to take a car service, make your reservation, then call after you pick up your bags. It's a pretty simple procedure, but meeting a car there can be frustrating, especially if there's a lot of traffic.

And of course, if you're not in a hurry, there are shared ride services, although the one time I tried that I found it frustrating. By the time we left I could have been half-way there on the metro, and since I was staying all the way downtown I was the last off. Better idea if you're staying midtown.
