If you visited Boston, Newport RI could be a day trip. Traveling north you could visit Salem MA and include the Peabody Essex Museum which has an entire Chinese house. Portsmouth NH has Strawbery Banke historic area plus there are some beautiful homes along the coast in Rye NH. There's a Frank Lloyd Wright home in Manchester NH and I would include the old mill buildings along the Merrimack River which have been turned into offices, restaurants, etc. Lots and lots to see within an hour of Boston. I am also partial to the architecture of downtown Concord NH. Lovely old buildings, the State House, State library, etc. The old Sears building was torn down and a new building blends in nicely. If you wanted to stay in an historic building, you could try the Centennial Inn.

We haven't made a final decision, but are looking at the following:
Boston and the surrounding area
Quebec and Montreal
San Francisco
New York
I have been gathering information and have given my friend a lot of information to review. The choice is hers. It doesn't matter to me, although I've been to NY and SF. She is fussier than I am about how much we can do in a day and how far she is willing to travel. I'll let her decide where she wants to go and what she wants to see, and I'll nail down the details.
