As I posted omn another thread, calling Cingular may not get you the best or even correct answer tothis question. My mother called Cingular to switch to a nation plan before leaving for Maui and was told that her phone wouldn't even work here, so there was no reason for her to change her plan. She was a bit miffed to find that her phone worked just fine here.
Cingular is my carrier. I have been with them since they absorbed my previous carrier. I am on perpetual roaming, but since I have a Nationplan, no worries. They once had service here in Hawai`i, but traded their Hawaiian licenses in a swap with with AT&T a few years ago. They are now in the process of buying AT&T wireless and will soon be back in the Hawaiian marketplace. But until then your phone will work fine; you will be roaming on AT&T or T-Mobile, depending on where you are. They operated on GSM with a TDMA overlay.
