Church near the WTC
 

Could anyone please give me the name of the lovely church that lies near the World Trade Center site? I toured it last spring and my brother is going there for the first time this week and I would love for him to see this beautiful church.

The church is probably St Paul's (George Washington worshiped there). Just Across from Ground Zero. It miraculously withstood the collapse of the towers, and then was used by the recovery workers in the months after 9/11 as a place of rest and refuge from their daily ordeal. Recently they have organized everything into exhibits, and it's a very, very good place to visit (as you already know!). They held meditation sessions inside during the memorials this year.

For your brother, an interesting thing to note is that when the workers rested on the pews during those long months, their equipment scratched and left marks in the wood, and these have been left intact and unrepaired, to honor the time they spent there.

I always remember the day in Spring, 2002 when I was down there, There were daffodils that were blooming in the little cemetary, which still had dust remaining on the ground. Just 2 or 3 daffs, but what a great sight it was, some sign of a future!!!

OOPS! And Trinity church is just 2 blocks further along Broasdway, so maube that's the one you want.

Trinity Church is where the workers went to rest during the WTC operation.

St Paul's Chapel, which is part of Trinity Parish is the church. It's at 209 Broadway, the back of the Church and the cemetary face out onto Ground Zero. Both Churches (St Paul's Chapel, and Trinity Church a couple of blocks south on Broadway) are really worth a visit!!!
St Pauls Chapel served the workers, and has the exhibits, which are wonderful,

Tell your brother to be emotionally prepared, as I'm sure you well know. I went to Ground Zero for the first time this past August. I was so overwhelmed with emotion. I remember the church, but I didn't go in. I had to leave, it was just too much for me. Seeing Ground Zero (after almost three years), I really did not expect for it to hit me so hard.

smoot - as you know, it IS very intense, and still is for all of us who live or have friends in that neighborhood. No one will ever get used to this.

But inside the chapel, so many people didn't hesitate, they just came from everyplace and put themselves in the middle of this thing. It's their story.

It's hard to be in there, everytime I go in, it all comes back to me vividly, it's really emotional , but it's worth doing. All around there we have a community working hard to get back on its feet, and the chapel is an important, life-affirming part of our healing process.

Poochie, I hope one day you will get to see the exhibits and spend a few moments in the chapel. Alot of us believe a real miracle took place there, because the church was spared, and continues to be a place of worship.

The church is a true miracle and I think it gives strength and hope to us all. Someday I will go inside.

There are 3 Churches within 3 blocks of the World Trade Center site.

St. Peter's RC is on the corner of Church Street and Barclay. St. Paul's on Broadway at Vescey Street and Trinity Church on Broadway just across from Wall Street.

The one most assciated with 9/11 was St. Paul's. Their fence became a place for people to hang memorials and it was there that many rescue workers went for rest.
