Christmas weather?
 

Hi,

Are there any weather forecasters out there who might know the Christmas week weather? We are coming from Australia, going to Leavenworth for the week of Christmas and hoping for some snow but not to be snowed in!! Just wondering, 8 days out from arriving, what the weather is looking like?

We drive through Leavenworth often and I'm wondering what there is to do there for a week.

We will be in the area at the same time, and have spent many Christmas/New Year's weeks in that area over the years. It will most likely be cold, probably in the 30's, and hopefully snowing, but our snow year so far is off to a slow start. A good website for the town/area is www.leavenworth.org which also has a webcam so you can see how the town as well as the mountains are looking.

As for things to do, there is SO much and we never have enough time. We like to ski(both downhill as well as cross country), snowshoe, hike, wine taste, and just wander. There have been some great shops that have opened up over the last 5 years or so as well, so much more variety than before.

Well, as a tourist from Australia with 2 active 9 and 10 year old boys, it's all about the snow (praying we have some, it's looking very bare at the minute!!). For me, it means sitting in front of a fire, or in the hottub, or playing in the snow with the boys.
But mostly, it is about doing nothing. I am a teacher and I have been planning the details of this trip for 2 years. School doesn't finish up for the year until the day before we fly out, so I am tired. I want to read books, browse in shops (hopefully for the christmas tree decorations I collect), eat at nice restaurants, read books (did I mention that one?)... so a week in Leavenworth sounds like bliss to me.

Kymjon--Sounds like this will be perfect for you! There is a huge Christmas store in town, called Kris Kringle.

I just realized -- no offence to Kansans -- that you can't possibly be talking about Leavenworth, Kansas, the only Leavenworth known to most Americans. It is the site of a notable Federal prison and a huge Army post.

So I googled and found another Leavenworth surrounded by mountains in Washington State. Who knew?

The chances of snow and hot tubs are considerably better there, even if you have to drive to a higher elevation.

Don't feel badly. You are informed about the Leavenworth that matters. Leavenworth, Washington, is a logging town that, down on its luck, reimagined itself as a faux Bavarian village. I doesn't remind me of any Bavarian village I know, but I guess it does for some others.

In the summer we like to some times have a hamburger at Gustav's, which has a magnificent mountain view from its deck.

Yes, Leavenworth WA. I am sure the people that live there and visit there would like to think that it is a town that matters!

This reimagining of towns us a Big Thing. There is a "Danish" town in Southern California and a "German" one in Georgia, I think.

Ackislander--It is:) Even though is is not set in Bavaria, they did a very good job with it! Family that lived in Austria for a year very much enjoyed this town, FWIW. Like anything, much is in ones attitude, IMO. We will be there again very soon and can't wait! Just need more snow.

Yes, sadly, no snow yet. The 'white Christmas' we are seeking is looking elusive.

While there may not be snow in the town of Leavenworth, there are higher elevations nearby including 2 ski resorts less than 1hr away. Mission Ridge and Stevens Pass ski resorts. They will definitely have snow. Some ski resorts have tubing for family fun for non-skiiers. not sure if either of these two do.

We have been skiing at Stevens Pass for many years. I like the nordic area there as well, which is about 5 miles east of the alpine area.

Ski Hill in Leavenworth is fun, but if the town doesn't have snow, it won't either. It is pretty close to downtown. We go tubing there.

There are also some areas around Lake Wenatchee, which is between Leavenworth and Stevens Pass, and that can be a good area for snow play.

Hi folks. Here we are in our cabin at Leavenworth. We have had NO snow in the last week which was a bit sad for our 'white Christmas' but you can't control the weather!!!
However, I have a question. We have to leave tomorrow , the town is booked out so we DO have to leave. And as luck would have it there is now a weather warning in place. We will be traveling on the I-90 which goes through the Snoqualmie(?) Pass , one of the spots under the warning. Given that there has been no snow and when we came through there a week ago, there was very little accumulated snow, is it still safe to set off towards Seattle? they are expecting 8-20 inches starting from midnight tonight.
Any advice?

What are your alternates? Do you have to drive? Leave as soon as you get up, the sooner you go, the less traffic and snow related issues.
