Christmas in the South

Looking for a great location to spend the week before Christmas in the southern states.
Suggestions would be appreciated along with the reasons that particular place is special during the holidays.

Ideas so far - Gatlinburg or Savannah

IMHO Gatlinburg is too touristy and awful garish. If you want to be in the Smokies, I would inquire into Asheville, NC. The Biltmore estate does Xmas decorations up right, the Grove Park Inn ($$) would be a magnificent place to stay, but there are other less costly lovely places as well. What is your budget, how long will you stay, what are your interests? Reply back and posters can give you more tailored suggestions.

How about Williamsburg?

Nashville? the opryland hotel is certainly something to see at christmas.

Biltmore would be beautiful. Winston Salem for Old Salem--a Moravian village with wonderful traditons. Charleston, because it would be fun, delicious and beautiful.

The Opryland is definitely something to see at any time of the year, but they do Christmas decor magnificently. However, most of the rest of Nashville doesn't feel particularly "Christmassy" - so if that's something you're going for, I like the suggestion of Asheville. If you just want a fun place to visit, though, Nashville's a great place!
