Christmas in Seattle
We are flying into SeaTac on Chritmas day and staying for 10 days. We have reservations at Homewood Suites/downtown. We like the idea of having a kitchen to be able to cook some of the wonders of Pike's mkt, a la Dungeness crab. We also like the separate bedroom idea. Any better suggestions?
We've visited Seattle and neighboring islands, Canada, on numerous times,(at least 12) but never during Christmas.(we are seriously considering a move to the Puget sound area, and want to see how gloomy it gets). Any thoughts on what is open on Holidays, food wise, and what else to do. We do not mind rain.We will have a car.

Take a day trip to Victoria B.C. and visit Butchart Gardens with their Christmas lights.

Christmas Day is predictably closed down (hotels, movies, many public places open, of course.) After that, well, everything is pretty typical for big cities between Christmas and New Years. There's a big New Years Eve celebration at Seattle Center (fireworks off the Space Needle, etc.) and if you're Nutcracker fans the PNW Ballet's version is quite famous - they adopted/resurrected the Balanchine production some years ago.

Snoqualmie Falls ought to have lots and lots of water going over; you might run up to Snoqualmie Pass or Stevens Pass and put on the slats if you're skiiers (get a 4WD car if you can); the Sonics and Seahawks (yuk) might be playing; hit the sales (big one at Nordstrom if you're inclined.)

Days are short and wet although there can be lovely misty sun days, perfect for a ferry outing. The zoo is fun.

We were there last Christmas and New Years for 14 days visiting my Son. Actually the weather was great, it only rained 2 days was was very clear. The sun was out almost every day.

We went to Mt Ranier twice to sled ride. Get snow chains and go for it. We didn't see any plays, but took in a lot of the attractions with lights and such.
enjoy,
Duane

Thanks y'all for your suggestions. We have done almost all, but in summer. We hope this Christmas will bring a new light the area. There is nothing prettier than the Pacific NW in summer. We are now considering bidding on Priceline after reading some of the prices they are getting at the Hyatt. If anyone hears any wonderful things happening, please post them. We have a Nordstrom in Atlanta, where we live, so that is not a must. We will drive to Snoqualmie, and perhaps Leavenworth. Any other ideas will be welcome.

Miriam, don't move here. It's crowded enough as it is. And we don't need any more Californians.
|
Speak for yourself, Farshy.

Miriam, can you arrange a house swap with a guy named Eyman? I'll give you his address.
|
Miriam: Do not pay any attention to Farshy as she speaks only for herself, besides being illiterate and not being able to read. (you clearly stated you live in Atlanta) Fortunately most of us born and raised here are not as rude as Farshy!

For atmosphere around the holidays, I can't imagine anything nicer than Gilman Village, in Issaquah. It's a collection of historic buildings that have beautiful shops, restaurants, gift stores, etc. and none of the chain stores. I've been going for 30 years. During the holidays, they have all the shops decorated, lights, etc. It's wonderful - Julie

Again, thanks for all the great suggestions. Julie, I was not aware of Gilman Village, so we will sure visit there.
John,I do not know a house swap will work right now as we have a friend come to house and plant sit, as my greenery really requires attention.
Duane, if I can get my husband in the snow, Mt Ranier here we come.
K, thanks for the kind words. There are Farshy's here in GA also, but we have met terrific people when we have visited before. We will be checking out Bellingham for housing costs, restaurants, ect. I am a food snob and require great places to shop and eat. I am aware of the proximity to Pike's market and Granville Island, and that is encouraging. The beauty of the area is the main draw, and so many nice folks make it even better.
Now all we need is great sunny days at Christmas(wishful thinking) and we will be in true heaven.
