Christmas in New York city

We are looking at taking the family to New York City for Christmas 2006. I thought that the lights, store windows and pre Christmas build up could be quite beautiful and memorable, not to mention shopping with the kids in FAO Schwartz, tree in Rockerfeller Square etc. I have however heard that it would be wet and slushy, freezing cold and not that special at all. I'm after opinions. It's that or Christmas in Lake Louise Canada for a white one which otherwise we would do after New York.

New York City is absolutely fabulous during the Christmas season, for all the reasons you mentioned and many more. Add to your list the tree at the Met and the laser light show on the dome at Grand Central Station and ToysRUs in Times Square...

The weather could very well be awful, but all you need do is dress for it so as to be comfortable while out and about. You also need to resign yourselves to the fact that it will be very busy and crowded on the streets, in the stores.

Now is not too soon to start planning, for finding a well located hotel, for deciding which shows to see.

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular really is spectacular.

Christmas in New York can be fun. The windows at Saks and Macy's are not to be missed.

The weather can be cold, wet, and miserable, but in some years December may not be all that bad at all. You will have to keep an eye on the weather reports to know what to expect.

We live in warm country, so our kids got a big kick wearing mittens, scarves, going ice skating at Rockefeller Center, and finding enough snow at Central Park to make snowballs. The sidewalks can get slick and slippery from the frozen ice so be prepared with good shoes and layer up.

I was very sorry I didn't get to NYC last month, since I live near and on average go there 4 times/year. It is wonderful at Christmas, no guarantees on weather, go prepared for anything.

Christmas is New York is wonderful, brilliantly lit, beautifully displayed and unforettable. There are a huge number of thins to see and do - including a number of special Christmas trees, the Nutcracker, store windows, skating at Rock Center etc.

It will likely be cold (high in the upper 30s) but most of the snow falls in Jan/Feb - getting a lot in December is unlikely. Also, you need to realize that the city cleans the snow off quickly esp in midtown where many of the streets and sidewalks are heated (many buildings are steamheated and the pipes run under the streets).

You can have a great tine - just be sure you're dressed warmly and have waterproof booties. (And however snowy and wet and cold it is - it will be much warmer and drier than Lake Louise.)

Well it could be wet and slushy, freezing cold....
it could be sunny and gorgeous, but cold....
But how does that song go..." the weather outside is frightful, but the fire so delightful....."

So, GO - dress appropriately and warm up when you need to in a nice cozy cafe....NYC is worth it at Christmas time - it's enchanting and absolutely memorable, especially at the holidays, no matter the weather in my opinon...

We were in NYC this year for Thanksgiving and yes it was cold, and we even had one day of rain and wind but we loved it! Just be sure you bring mittens/gloves (several pair - my daughter lost two pair - kept leaving them in the taxi!) and don't forget ear muffs. We didn't have those and wished we had all brought some. Despite the weather, there is still so much to see and do and so much fun to be had!
