Christmas in New York and Staying at The Plaza

My daughter (college age) and I have reserved a one bedroom plaza suite at The Plaza for the week before Christmas. I have been reading so many horrible reviews on this site that I am beginning to wonder if we made a mistake in choosing The Plaza as our hotel (we usually stay at The New York Palace for our annual trip to New York). Any input please on our choice of reservations. Thanks! Also, we've seen Hairspray, The Producers, Radio City numerous times, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King -- any suggestions for the #1 shows to see. We have already booked Gypsy and Mamma Mia -- need two other suggestions. Thanks again!

The negative criticism about the Plaza's rooms is primarily directed toward the standard rooms. The suites are much nicer on balance (though they vary in style quite a bit).

I suggest de la Garda and Forbidden Broadway. Since you've seen a good bit of "Broadway" you will totally enjoy the Forbidden variety...it is a scream.

Can't help you with the Plaza, although I've always thought the NY Palace was nice.

For Broadway shows, have you seen Millie? We really enjoyed it. The two shows I really want to see next are Avenue Q (that would be a different one -- it's with muppets and is about race/prejudice) and Wicked (The Wizard of Oz told from the perspective of the Wicked Witch).

I saw "Millie" and loved it. As for the Plaza, I am not familiar with the suites, but the restaurant and service was excellent.

Top on my list is "The Boy from Oz" starring Hugh Jackman. I think it is a very hot ticket, you'll need to get that concierge to do some magic for you.

The Plaza location is magical, you'll have a great week. LMF

I've seen 2 suites at the Plaza (friends from out of town visiting) & they were both very nice. I agree I think the negatives are probably about standard rooms.

I'd see Wicked & possibly Millie. There's a showed called Never Gonna Dance opening Dec 4 taken from G Rogers/F Astaire movies that could be fun. Good cast including Karen Ziemba. Read about it here (you will have to click theater lisitngs then the show)

You will love the suites at The Plaza. I agree with the other posters that the standard rooms are iffy.

Avenue Q would be a suggestion.

Mclaurie and I are always on the same page!

BTW, I can't imagine "The Boy from Oz" being a hot ticket. It is getting poor reviews, although they say Hugh Jackman is great.

The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center is magical. My adult daughter and I saw it together a few years ago and loved it.

If you haven't seen Chicago or Cabaret, I'd recommend those long-running hits. Also, Movin' Out is worth your time.

Thanks for all the great responses! I will keep the suite at The Plaza and hope for the best. My other thoughts were toward St. Regis Club (however, the location isn't what I really want) or St. Regis (but no suite availability on that weekend!)

As for the show suggestions, I was actually thinking about either Chicago or Movin Out or Boy From Oz (although the reviews aren't the best for Boy From Oz -- anyone see the show?) because we have already seen Caberet and The Nutcracker. Anyone see Cat on a Hot Tin Roof? I was a little iffy about Never Gonna Dance because of the age of the music, although I would probably love it. We never saw 42nd Street, which is hard to believe. Any feedback on the above choices is greatly appreciated. Thanks again to everyone!

Scubadive,

The St Regis Club is part of the Essex House, just a block from the Plaza. I highly recommend it.

You'll love "42nd Street", as long as you like the old Busby Berkeley-type musicals.

Avenue Q!!! Your college age daughter will love it!! Myself, my wife and our 28 year old daughter laughed like crazy! It is also a contrast from the more stuffy old fashioned Broadway shows you are going to.

Chicago is a great show, you'll love it. I've heard mixed things about Movin' Out, but a lot of people definitely like it, I've just always thought the best thing about Billy Joel music was hearing Billy Joel sing and play it, but it is a very popular show.
