Christmas in Johnstown, PA

Family members from Chicago, Cleveland and central PA are converging on Johnstown, PA this Christmas for 3 or 4 days to visit with family. The problem is that our elderly parents have only a small apartment, and even if we all stay at a local hotel as planned and dine out, where do we get togther to just sit and talk for hours? I checked the Holiday Inn and they don't have suites. Any Fodorites with knowledge of the area who can suggest a good gathering place for the whole family - included 10 at last count. Thanks for any suggestions.

Last time I was in Johnstown it was the Holiday Inn, not a lot to choose from. I would get a AAA book or search on line for any newer hotels.

There is a Comfort Inn and Econo Lodge but I don't think they would have a suites either. The Holiday Inn is the best in town. I would suggest that you get adjoining rooms and open up the connecting doors.

Success! (sort of) I found that the Holiday Inn Express in Richland has 2, 2 room suites. Booked, but I can cancel if I find someplace better. If you think of anything, please post. Thanks again.

I haven't stayed at that particular Holiday Inn Express, but in general they are nice with refrigs, micros, etc. The only problem I would have with that one is the location (right on Rt. 56), but if that isn't important to you, then you should be fine.

I can't believe you've received this many responses for my small home town:) I usually stay at the Comfort Inn on Theatre Drive. If you get one of the larger rooms with a jaccuzzi tub I think you will have space for several guests to hang out with you. Have stayed in those rooms before and they were comfortable and clean. I think there's be enough room for seating for 10, you just need to find the chairs.

I agree about the Holiday Inn Express, the location is a little further out but the internet pics look nice (haven't stayed there). Also another consideration would be the Hampton Inn by the Galleria shopping mall.

Regarding a place to just hang out, I think Penn National sportsbook would possibly be a place to consider for just a gathering spot, it is a horse race and sportsbook but they have a few rooms for seating and you really don't have to spend much, you can pass time there just ordering sodas or even food. Some people get together there just to socialize.

Not sure of your age group but my friend in her 30's hangs out there with her sister sometimes to watch football games and my father in his 60's also spends time there. Just mentioning this spot because it's in the Richland area.

Any other questions don't hesitate to ask, my parents still live there as well as my closest friend if you are looking for dining suggestions.
