Christmas Getaway close to home??
 

We are looking for a close ( not more then 3 hours) getaway for christmas.I am about one hour south of NYC. We thought of going into NYC but I am not sure that is the type of thing we are looking for. I was thinking of something more quite, with a fireplace, nice view, it can even be cold and snowy. We would like to have a nice christmas eve dinner. All I can think of is upstate NY but I am not sure where. Just looking for a nice place with a nice hotel or cozy Inn. Any suggestions would really help.

Will you drive or need to take train etc? Price range for room and dinner?

How about the Hudson River Valley area, such as near West Point, or Hyde Park or Rhinebeck? We are going there for a long weekend in January.

Another idea: the Berkshires in MA. You could stay in Sheffield, Great Barrington, Stockbridge (Red Lion Inn), or Lee or Lenox.

Amtrak does stop at Mystic CT. The Mystic Seaport sounds good.

I'm with Kwoo... head up the Hudson River... there's the Thayer Hotel at West Point or nearby Cornwall for B&B choices...

Another thought would be the Jersey shore... Spring Lake has some great old B&B choices... we liked the Normandy...

They all sound like good ideas. We are going to drive. Stockbridge, Ma is going on my list of things to see, Norman Rockwell museum is a most but it is too far for this trip. We just want a close trip, know more then 3 hours. We are now thinking of Lancaster, Pa but we will leave Friday instead of Saturday-Monday. I think we will go to the Sight and Sound theater to see "The Mircle of Christmas". Has anyone seen this show? Any thoughts? Also suggestions on a nice place for dinner in the Lancaster, Ronks area?

The price for dinner does not matter. Hotel could be from $80-$150 as long as it is nice, clean etc. Cheap is good but it has to be clean and not a dump.

For history buffs, Valley Forge is worth a visit.

In addition to the Brandywine River Museum for the Wyeths, the area is also home to Longwood Gardens and Winterthur. All are spectacular destinations during the Christmas season. (Note that Longwood requires timed tickets for entrance for the holiday display unless you are a Garden Pass member.)

kmbp: I agree, but we have already been to Longwood and it was wonderful however we did not go to Winterthur. We need to make up our mind real soon!! I have not made any reservations for anything as of yet. I am leaning toward Pa, Lancaster.I have an idea for hotel but nothing for dinner. As I said in my other post we will see a show at sight and sound, I think?? I wanted to know if anyone else has been.

Mohonk Mountain House is beyond your budget but it really does do fireplaces and snow and out door activities and probably Christmas really well.

I accompanied a group to what I think was the Sound Theatre you are talking about. Their productions are quite amazing but you really do have to be Christian to enjoy them. As someone from a Jewish background it was mildly offensive (I am pretty liberal about this stuff but I'd never go out of my was to go there again).
